During our recent visit to Laguedoc/Occitania we traced the path (more or less) of the Albigensian Crusade. Naturally one must wind up at Chateau de Montsegur. As we climbed the path we read Zoe Oldenbourg's Massacre at Montsegur. It was a pleasure to read her account and view the geography and the ruins (which though not from the 13th century... More

Who were the Cathares who lived in this place... How did they held off 10 00 men for 11 months. And why did they choose to burn alive...

You can view the ruined chateau nicely from below. Your energies ( it is a steep climb) and money are better spend at other chateaux, such as Puilaurens ( better condition, demands a climb) or Foix (in town, restored, little climb) or, of course, Carcassonne.

It's a hard climb up especially on a hot day but there is shade on the path at times and points to stop and admire the view. 700m and 170m ascent from ticket office. The views are definitely worth it from the top and there is a calm feeling of history. Good value for money as it includes a visit... More

Charismatic chateaux haunt the landscape of Languedoc Rousillon in the foothills of the French Pyrenees on a spectacular road trip down from Lombez in Gers to Limoux, below Carcassonne on the D118. The accent to Montsegur in the blazing sun was perhaps not the best decision I have ever made but it was well worth the discomfort of navigating exposed... More

It is a 30+/- minute hike up to the chateau with some slippery stones, but well worth it. The view of the mountains is breath taking.

My husband who walked the steep climb to the castle was awarded with stunning views and one of the most fascinating places in the Pyrenees. The rest of us had a dull time visiting the village. If you go, wear good shoes and attempt the climb. It would be much more rewarding than visiting the village. We regretted not wearing... More

I really wanted to visit this last stronghold of the Cathars. Knowing one of the best things about the place are the views, I tried to plan this visit for a sunny day. Whilst Carcassonne (the place we were staying in) had lovely weather on the day we visited, it was quite different by the time we got to the... More

Getting up to the chateau is not an easy task, and was a challenging 40 minute climb over an uneven and often slippery track. Definitely wear good shoes especially if it has rained. Once at the top we were just in time for the guided tour, which turned into an hours captivating explanation of the history of the site and... More

For me this was the highlight of our two and a half weeks in France. The climb is a steep pull but the view is INCREDIBLE. If I lived locally I would be up there once a week. When we arrived there was a very lengthy tour given by an expert. It was in French so we didn't really follow... More
