If you haven't read Michel Roquebert's 5 volumes on the CATHARES, especially the Montsegur volume, you can find shorter versions available which will give you the ambiance to enjoy your visit. Depending upon who is guiding the day of your visit, you may be transported...More

If you're into Cathar history, and love castles, then Montsegur is the one you have to do. It's a long steep climb, so wear decent shoes, but the views from the top are worth it. This was the second time we have done the climb,...More

We parked in the large car park area at the base of the hill. The climb definitely looks much more daunting than it actually is, especially for my youngest daughter. Luckily the path is winding and gradually makes its way up, and a bonus is...More

After my thrilling visits of Chateaus Puilarens, Peyrepetuse and Queribus, and the buildup of expectations from all my readings, the chateau at Montsegur was a let down, I am sad to say. To be sure, we were there in the rain, but so we were...More

Monsegur was the last refuge of the Cathars, a sect that resisted the catholic church in the 12th century. Not a military stronghold, but a last hiding place - after its surrender 200 Cathars were burnt alive. Very moving history

You don't need a tour. It really is just a ruin and you can visit it without a guide in ten minutes. There are basically just the walls still standing. It's perched on the top of a hill which you can walk up in 20 to 30... More
