Surprisingly beautiful
Dec 2019 • Solo
After being in Ebenalp a must visit was Appenzell town. What a surprise was to found this church which from outside seemed to be closed and not attractive. It is located next to a cemetery. Both places shared a marvellous view.
Expect not a big place but their frescoes, windows and altar made an impression on visitors.
Lite a candle, make a prayer and sit for a while you will soon feel a calm feeling and will leave the place in peace - if you are a believer of course...

Remembering Loved Ones
Nov 2019
When we travel we always visit churches and light candles to remember loved ones that have passed. This church was not so beautiful on the outside but when you step in, it was truly magnificent. The stain glass windows are works of art and the statues and artifacts were wonderful. Appenzell is a small town but the bells were special and will always be remembered as we reflect on our stay in this part of Switzerland.

Beautiful church!
Sep 2019
I only visited a few churches in Switzerland but of the ones I saw, this was the most beautiful and ornate. Very impressive for a small town.

Superb Church
Jul 2018
A fabulous example with a super inside full of statues & paintings. Well worth the visit. Even though it was in use for a service we could experience the grandeur.

This church is under renovation at this time so it is not open to visitors. Should be done in a couple of years

Spectacular cemetery
May 2018 • Family
The austere exterior of this close to 1000 year old church in the small cantonal capital town of Appenzell stands in stark contrast with the lavish ornate mix of gothic, baroque and neoclassical styles of the frescoes and stained glass windows of the interior. What I love most though in this church is the adjacent graveyard with a view into the surrounding hills and Appenzell-style houses. Most extraordinary in my opinion is the mix of grave markers, some simple wooden crosses, others polished stone creations and yet others made of simple rough-hewn rock. Such a wonderful diversity in materials and styles to embellish the last resting place of the town people. A must-see.

Church with graves
Apr 2018 • Friends
This was one of the two spots recommended by the tourism office to visit in Zermatt. This little city os easily walkable using its main street, and this church is in my point of view a good place to visit. It has a beautiful architecture and bears the graves of those who tried to climb the Matterhorn without suuccess.

Beautiful church in beautiful city
Feb 2018 • Solo
This church is a place to stop and visit while walking through the old town of Appenzell. The cemetery is also a quiet place to walk and enjoy the view over the river and rest of the city. Worth a stop!

One of my favourite places in the WORLD
Jul 2017 • Family
I love this place. It's in the village where my in laws live, so we visit Appenzell several times a year for more than 20 years now. Whatever the season, I visit the Church. It's fantastic and apart from an impressive building in its own right I so enjoy being able to take time out and reflect.

Alpine Opulence
Jul 2017 • Couples
The Church of Saint Mauritius is located in the Northeast corner of Appenzell next to the River Sitter. The building originates from around 1069. During its history 4 churches have been built on the site with each church being larger than the original. Most of the Gothic features were destroyed in a fire but the tower still remains along with the quire which is between the nave and the sacred area. The location and interior of this Catholic Church as it stands today is quite magnificent with its lavish ornate interiors, stunning stained glass and vibrant frescoes. It is certainly well worth a visit if you are lucky enough to be in the beautiful town of Appenzell which is situated at the foot of the Alpstein mountains. St Mauritius was attributed to be the patron saint of Army Infantry & Weapon smiths. The location of the church and grounds are as you would expect in Switzerland, beautifully clean and pristine, the grave yard is particularly impressive with its eclectic grave stones and markers.
