This was my first visit to the Urho Kekkonen National Park. There are many marked hiking paths and cycling routes all over and of course one can hike freely all over the place.
I hiked to Iisakkipää, Kiilopää and Luutalammi and the scenery was just great: lovely open fell scenery, lovely small brooks and reindeer.

We've visited UKK in summer and in winter and enjoyed both times. You can do a lot of different activitites hier: hiking, biking, croos country skiing, etc. Views from the hills are wonderful and you can run in to reindeer while there.

Nice place for xc-skiing. Tracks are opened mainly from February. Would guess that best time for travel would be March.

As the second biggest National Park in Finland this park offers peace and tranquility just few steps from the center of Saariselkä village. You have easy walking routes coming to the border and then short and longer snowshoeing trail. Short one you can do on any weather but the longer one takes you up on the fjell so you don't want to take that in a bad weather. Skiing tracks are going more deeply inside the park. At the summer hiking routes are going everywhere.

We stayed in Kiilopää hotel and so we could easily enjoy thus beautiful park in wintertime. Today we climbed the hill. Snow shoes would have made our walk easier, but nevertheless we enjoyed it. The path is very well marked. The views were spectacular and we even saw some reindeers. You could listen to the silence.
If you prefer cross country skiing, than this place is great as well. There are many tracks. Ad inexperienced cc skiers we did a tour of 22km, which was a little bit too much. But as the path is illuminated you can take your time. We loved it!

Awesome fells, and view of and from them. Especially during mid-September when the autumn colours (Ruska) are at their best. So many nice hiking trails to try.

The Urho Kekkonen National Park has a definite other-worldly feel to it, with dwarf forests, giant mushrooms and seams of gemstone-like feldspar running through many of the rocks.
I visited in early August, just after the sun had started to set again, but before it ever got truly dark. The air temperature at that time of year was ideal for walking, the trails were fairly obvious, the terrain wasn’t at all challenging, but there were still some nice views from what hills there were, and the little rain that did fall came in brief showers, rather than storms. I had been warned to expect swarms of mosquitoes, but thankfully they didn’t materialise – maybe they are restricted to certain areas or perhaps it was just too late in the year for them.
I stayed in Saariselkä and made a number of day trips into the park. If - or rather when - I go back I will probably try a multi-day hike. Even while staying in Saariselkä village I saw plenty of wildlife; reindeer in the street, a hare on the lawn outside my room and a red squirrel actually running around inside the hotel!

There are also 5/6 walking trails down at Kiilopaa Fell Centre, again we just about managed without snowshoes. I think you can also use the Kiilopaa trails for fatbikes. You see fat bkes in hire shops but doesn't quite seem like they've got the trail infrastructure up and running just yet.

Buses - the resort skibus in Saariselka runs a bit less infrequently than you'd think so just watch out. It also only runs 1 x daily in each direction down to Kiilopaa but you can get the airport bus also tht runs more frequently. They also have an amazing traditional smoke sauna and ice swimming down at Kiilopaa for 13 euros that is certainly an experience.

We most enjoyed our Husky dog safari and Reindeer safari.

This was the first time I had try to ‘Mush’ and found the course challenging due to the Snow falling and also the gradients of the Course. Look forward to the next time.

However, lots of fun and the Dog’s were great to be with.
Very different from the sedate Reindeer safari visit the day before.
Two great days, thank you.

What an amazingly beautiful place - miles of well signposted ski tracks through quiet countryside. The views were amazing. Well worth a visit whether to ski or walk.
