Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you want to know about the history of Finland’s mining industry and part of the story of Finland becoming wealthy, go to this place. It is a lesson about history and mining but has also really nice views. View from the tower is great.

Very interesting place, this old mine. Lot of history and great to see. Especially for kids it can be quite exciting, especially the underground mining tunnel. For kids there is also a great playground, worth a visit. It is a bit expensive though for what you get. We also got an impression from the website there would be some activities for the children to choose from (guided) but it ended up being water color painting whereas there was some talk about guided treasure hunt. Other than that nice place.

Very interesting place and worth a visit. My husband attended the guided tour and he was very impressed by it. I visited the children's play area 'children's mine' with our son during that time. As it was a warm day, our son found lots of things to do in there both inside and outside.
We had lunch at the restaurant from the buffet. It was ok, nothing fancy though. There wasn't any separate food for kids though, perhaps it is not needed.
All in all a place worth of visiting.

It was great experience to be there and surrounding was nice and well organised. The walk in tunnel and to be up in tower was cool. I can recommend dinner there, it was delicious, and the children playground was awesome.

Excellently presented mining history, not only telling the history of Outokumpu mine, but overall overview of the mining technologies in the past. The museum includes a historical underground mine tunnel, full of atmosphere of the underground working conditions. The consentrator plant was also nicely presented, but there I missed some timing information, for example about some 'ancient' computer aided X-ray analyzing systems (looked like from late 1970s or so). Also we missed some explanation concerning the final step of drying the concentrate (some type of rotating tunnel oven). We missed the guided tour (noly 2 times per day?) , but even without it we got a good overview about the mining history.

The museum is located in the city center of Outokumpu, about 45km from Joensuu. It is well marked, so it is easy to find. Open 10-18 at summer time, prices are: family 45€ (2adults and 2children), Adults 14€ and children (2-12 years old) 12,50€ (july 2016), the ticket is for the whole area. Mine train is 2€/person, track is about one km long, three times a day, but not on rainy days. There is a mining museum, a museum tunnel, where you can see history of maining at authentique surroundings - tunnel is about 200m long, and temperatue is quite low, so take your jacket with you. Guided tours are twice a day (11 and 15) and takes about 1,5h. In the mining area there are lot of buildings, like a mining tower, a powerhouse etc which you can visit. If you climb to the tower scenery is very nice. There is also "a childrens mine" - a themepark for children.

Along the highway from Kuopio to Joensuu, in the small city of Outokumpu, is what used to be one of the largest copper mines in Europe. After the production of metals ceased in 1989, the site continued its life as a museum. From the mine shaft up to the 96-meter mine tower, you will get a picture of how the ore travels from inside the earth to be enriched into pure metal, while enjoying the Karelian scenery once you climb up the tower. It's fun to wander around in the vast museum area, always finding new and interesting locations for e.g. photography. Because of the size of the area and the requirement of some uphill walking, the place doesn't get very crowded. I went to the museum with a friend on the way to Joensuu from Kuopio, and it was a sudden idea to visit the museum. I'm sure we'll return.

In the centre of small town Outokumpu is Mine museum located. The museum is old mine, and it was very important part of peoples daily life at the area even till 80's. People lived at area, near mine and for exemple they went to sauna at area saturdays with their families.
You can see the old tower from long distance and when you climb up the hill, you can see Vuonos, other mine not so far away.
The museum is memorial site for those who worked there. It is very important part of Finnish and Karelian history.
There is also a stone park, where you can see what kind of stone mine produced. Some stones you can see at the mine,in shop and buy for a souvenier.
Information and web site do not give right image of the place; so it's better visit it youself.
