Old town of towers
Jun 2017 • Couples
Noli was once an important maritime town - albeit in the shadow of Genua.
From what I've learned it was adorned with around 70 towers in its golden age. Now stands four left, of which the "Quattro Canti" is the highest.
The town is a quaint little pearl, well worth going around for an hour or so.

The highest of the four medieval towers survived in Noli (they were 72!)
Jan 2016 • Couples
Those who know the Noli town are aware that it claims to be "the fifth Maritime Republic" [of Italy] (the four commonly recognized republics are Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice).
The claim of Noli is based on its power for many centuries, as city of sailors / traders, which have made the city prosperous, grown in the shade of the nearby, greater Genoa.
A striking testimony of this past power (as part of a historical center overall well preserved) are the medieval towers. Four of them remain, but it seems that in the thirteenth century they were seventy-two.
The "Torre dei Quattro Canti" (or "Torre del Canto") is the highest among those survived, and characterizes the skyline of the town.
It's 38 meters high, and is built in brick, with a greenish stone base (green stones are very common in Liguria). Inside it was divided into levels, which were linked by flights of stairs. But, since the tower for a long time is no longer used for defensive purposes for which it was built, interior floors and stairs, which were wooden, collapsed and no longer exist.
Fortunately, however, the tower itself remained (also a careful restoration has been recently achieved), and together with the other three surviving towers it helps yet to give a strong visual character to the city.
