About
A Spectacular Botanical Garden and Wildlife Park Open to the public since the 1st April 2001, the Botanical Gardens at Deshaies are a recent creation. This park, whose youth is imperceptible, has very quickly imposed itself as the place to be for nature enthusiasts and lovers of tropical plants. Situated on the windward coast of Basse-Terre, 100m in altitude up above the town of Deshaies, the garden stretches out over 5 hectares of sloping mountainside. Its favourable location guarantees beautiful views over the coast and an unrivalled vantage-point overlooking the bay of Deshaies. The site was already home to a nursery created by Guy Blandin, a plant-lover who brought rare and unknown plant species from his travels around the world back to Guadeloupe. Many of them unfortunately disappeared when Cyclone Hugo hit and severely damaged the island in 1989. The humorist Michel Colluci, also known as Coluche, acquired the property in 1979. A few years later, in 1985, he invited his friend Michel Gaillard, an interior landscaper in mainland France, to set up his nursery there in exchange for taking care of the property's garden. A year later, the death of Coluche brought the future of the property back into question. Michel Gaillard bought back the property in 1991 to honour the memory of his friend, with the idea in mind of creating a botanical garden. This risky and ambitious project required several years of planning, of research into its feasibility and then of execution. The garden was finally brought about in accordance with Michel Gaillard's and the landscaper Samuel Craquelin's plans. Over the course of the path which snakes its way through the gardens, visitors today discover a world of real abundance: a world with 800 species of plant all brought together, with several animal species, which were introduced much to the delight of children, and with the most spectacular and unexpected landscapes following one after the other. Tourists are invited on an unforgettable walk amidst fifteen or so different scenes.

- bourne2climbTowcester, United Kingdom21 contributionsLovely gardensWe got to the gardens at 9am when they first opened which was good as we could walk round at our leisure with plenty of photo opportunities for humming birds, parrots and flamingoes as well as the amazing trees. Unfortunately not many of the flowers were in bloom so must be the wrong time of year. A pleasant way to spend a couple of hours.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 November 2023
- Kim WAcworth, Georgia139 contributionsMust see in a visit to GuadaloupeWhat a lovely garden on the island of Guadeloupe. There is plentiful parking and a small entrance fee. The grounds are lovely and full of native plants and trees. Get on a guided tour if you can. Their knowledge is vast and their stories are entertaining. Be sure to stop and see the Australian Finches which you can feel some nectar to! Need a few hours to properly enjoy the grounds. Be sure to stop and check out the pastry bar near the gift shop. So many delicious treats!!Visited February 2024Travelled soloWritten 18 February 2024
- Alison MSan Anselmo, California50 contributionsLush and Spectacular Botanical Gardens—Do Not Miss! This is a fabulous and lush oasis featuring spectacular flowers, trees, plants, parrots, flamingos and lorikeets. There is also a very pleasant cafe and restaurant overlooking a waterfall and the flamingos. We took many photos and were just so amazed by the beauty and diversity of the plants growing throughout the park, many not native to Guadeloupe. The gift shops is also very nice and adjacent to the cafe. Highly recommend a visit! We had three hours to spend before heading to the airport for our return trip to the US and that was perfect timing to really experience the Botanical Gardens.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 29 March 2024
- AliceAtlanta, Georgia43 contributionsBeautiful botanical garden & zooThis botanical garden is an unexpected delight. It has many varieties of plants and trees from all around the world. In addition, there are coy fish, parrots, and goats so it’s almost like having a zoo as well. There is one part where you see a beautiful seaside cliff view. They also have some cool man made waterfalls and babbling brooks. This is nicer than we expected. Would say it’s larger than the botanical garden in St. Croix.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2024
- Jan Taborsky239 contributionsFine botanical gardenNice illustration of tropical trees and flowers. There is a part of wet garden and part of "dry" - cactuses etc. Do not forget to buy feed for animals (parrots, goat, carps) if you have children. Restaurant opens at 12 a.m., there is also a bar, whre you can buy a snack. But better to avoid it. The staff need to sip Cola really often and they need aprox. 2 minutes to handle you a bottle of watter :-(Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 May 2024
- Diane R21 contributionsMust visitAmazing place. We went twice, it’s so beautiful and peaceful. The restaurant was closed for renovation but the snack bar was very good value for money and the food was lovely. There’s so much to see and it’s all spectacular, it’s really nice to get the pots of food for the fish, birds and goats as well. Definitely worth a visit.Visited September 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 September 2024

Personally, we went there as a family, especially for the pleasure of Madame during a “northern Basse Terre” tour. Very pretty park and unfortunately for us very hot and humid... We finally ate at the panoramic restaurant and we ate very good local dishes at very good prices. Nice surprise.

The Jardin Botanique is worth the trip along the windy roads to get there. We arrived at 9:30 am and wandered through the garden surrounded by a few people with children. It had rained for a few minutes, which is typical in the rainforest, so you may want to wear a hat to keep rain off your face.
The garden is beautifully landscaped and consists of approximately 13 types of gardens which flow seamlessly from one to another. If you are there at noon, there is a restaurant at the top of a waterfall with views of the garden and the sea. There is also a 'snack shop' available once you have completed your visit.
Tip: There is an automatic ticket dispenser on the left side at the entrance. It accepts credit cards and will save you time as you will avoid the long cashier line.
Even if you aren't a garden enthusiast, this excursion is a welcome and relaxing change from the beach. As we left at 11:00 we saw a crowd gathering at the entrance, so if possible, arrive early.

The botanical garden is beautifully laid out and you can learn a lot about the local plants. The lorises, which you can feed yourself with nectar, are also worth experiencing.
The cafe above the waterfall offers a beautiful view over the garden
The park is definitely worth visiting, even if the entrance fee seems a bit excessive to me

We were very disappointed that everything was written in French and no English whatsoever so very difficult to enjoy thd excursion when we hadn’t a clue what flowers and plants we were looking at. What was worse was that we were not told that it was all in French when we booked this trip on board an English cruise ship with tui!!

Beautiful place but staff not friendly and nothing in English !
Shuttle was late by 25 minutes so only had 40 minutes to race round as it closes at 4pm.
Beautiful but nothing in English so hard to understand and take advantage of the place.
Do pay for the overpriced ‘feed’- parrots we’re the highlight (and flamingos!) don’t forget the goats st the end of the tour- the 3rd pot of food is for them which wasn’t explained so the fish had it instead …!!!

Quite simply an oasis of freshness and color where it's nice to take a break in the middle of the fauna and flora of Guadeloupe. It's just a dream to savor, a welcome respite. We walked the paths of this park, amazed at each turn by the splendor of its floral decorations. to end our visit we treated ourselves to a gastronomic stop at the restaurant which overlooks the park for a moment where the hands of the clock stop accompanied by the birds pecking at our side. just an exceptional moment for a brilliant meal, served by our dedicated and friendly host Pascaline who works to satisfy the modest passing customers that we were. Kisses to her and those around her; it was a wonderful moment. we will come back.....

Magnificent visit despite a start in the rain.
There are several plants and trees that we are not used to observing in Europe.
The presence of parrots, flamingos, fish and goats was appreciated by our 3 year old child. The animals seem well treated.
Little advice: buy the food pack for 2 euros, this will allow you to feed the fish, parrots and goats.
At the end of the route, there is a children's play area with several sheltered picnic tables. There is also a beautiful souvenir shop.

How difficult would it be to walk to the Jardin from Deshaies?
Written 14 December 2019
That clearly depends on where you are starting and how young and/or fit you are.
And how tired you want to be when you get there.
It is not more than a km or two from the Deshaies harbour, but that is mostly uphill, if I recall correctly. And you will have to be prepared to dodge traffic, there being next to no pedestrian allowance.

We are thinking of visiting these gardens on either Saturday or Sunday but wondering if these two days are normally busier then during the week.

We went for when it opened on the Sunday morning and there were no problems it did get busier as the day progressed.

Hi I have limited mobility but would be ok if there are seats around the gardens that I can use from time to time? Many thanks

Bonjour !
