Diyasaru Park is located near the Parliament in Sri Lanka and is a beautiful green space in Colombo. To enter the park as a local, you need to purchase a ticket for 100 rupees.
Upon entering the park, you can easily forget that you're in Colombo due to its lush greenery and serene environment. A map is available to help guide you through the park's paths, where you can observe various insects, butterflies, and birds. There is also a bird-watching tower, making it an ideal spot for bird photography enthusiasts.
Benches are provided throughout the park for visitors to relax. The best time to visit is between 6:30 and 7 AM, when you can see a lot of birds. The park is well-maintained, and wedding photography services are available—just be sure to book in advance if you plan to take advantage of that.
Overall, I highly recommend Diyasaru Park as an excellent greenery retreat near the bustling city of Colombo.

Review- Diyasaru Park
A Park which is situated at Thalawathugoda area. It's filled with Trees, Flowers, Butterflies, Birds, Insects and so on. I believe this place is a must visit for "NATURE" lovers. A price of 100rs is charged for local(Srilankan) adults and 50rs for kids. So during the purchase of the ticket your NIC number is registered for safety reasons. Opening hours are from 6am to 6pm.The place had ample man made places to sit. So you can sit and relax. But for betterment, I would suggest please don't allow any one to take food inside the place, because the paper and polythene thrown everywhere after the meals, which spoils the environment and the beauty of the park.
A place you can visit for very reasonable price😊😍 and enjoy the NATURE!

Before 1980, this place was a paddy field. But during the construction period of the new Parliament, the land was acquired and used to dump dredged material from that project. After the construction of the Parliament, the land has become a marshy land and so it was neglected.
The word ‘Diyasaru’ means ‘water rich’ in Sinhalese. The park is situated next to Diyawanna Oya, on Japan friendship road. It is the opposite side of Diyawanna Oya, to the side where Beddagana Wetland Park is situated. The park is extended to about 60 acres. It is an ideal place to get away from the busy and harsh life in the city.
Then invasive plants had begun to invade the marshy land and slowly it has become a wetland. During the flood in 2010, the authorities have identified the importance of the management of the wetlands, and a decision has taken to further develop this area as a wetland. The land has been divided into several islands, and canals have been made. With heavy moderation the land has been converted to a complete and beautiful wetland. That is how Diyasaru Park was born.
There are two large huts right after the entrance which are dedicated to studying and group sessions. Diyasaru Park is more concerned to facilitate studies on bio-diversity and wetland management. Therefore, workshops and seminars are held inside the park in the regular basis. These two huts are used for such kind of gatherings. Outsiders can also reserve this place for an event, and it hasn’t to be related bio-diversity or environmental.

We found Diyasaru uyana or park to be an attractive area with well laid out walkways along a stream and some inert water bodies which were naturally landscaped by colonisation of native vegetation. We saw many bird species and it had a watch tower to provide an enhanced bird watching experience. We spotted a pair of “Pheasant-tailed Jacana” dipping their heads in water looking for food. Some areas had very pretty water lilies in bloom. It was very pleasant and a well spent visit.

An urban wetland park which got opened recently. An admirable concept to build such a park without impacting the natural habitat. You can observe many birds, butterflies and insects here. A good learning experience for kids. Great place to spend an evening. A study area is available inside and many students are visiting as it seems. At the far end a bird watching tower also built and it gives nice views of the wetland. Some information boards are put in place so that you can really learn something new. A large parking area is available. Entrance ticket is 100 rupees.

On our first full day of bird watching in Sri Lanka our group (eight of us including guides) stopped by this park for a couple of hours. It was a great way to begin the tour as this park offered some of the more basic and common birds that we would see throughout our journey. The park is primarily a wetlands that is continuously being developed. A local park naturalist stopped by and gave a talk regarding the development of the park and the birds and mammals that could be seen in the area..

The Diyasaru Wetland Park which was formerly the Thalawathugoda Biodiversity Study Park is an artificially built wetland. Covering approximately 60 acres with artificial ponds and canals, naturalists claim that if you are lucky you could see over 50 varieties of migratory birds, over 15 fish varieties including three endemic to Sri Lanka and over 25 butterfly species. It is also home to the endangered Fishing Cat.
We visited on a Sunday morning after a phone inquiry. Entrance tickets are just 100 rupees each and a 30-45 minute boat ride is 500 rupees for 4 persons (with life jackets).
Please make sure to buy your boat ticket at the entrance when buying your entrance ticket. The variety of bird sightings would of course depend on the season, climate and migratory patterns. Although if you look closely you will see many different species which may look quite common at first glance
It was 5 of us - a couple of friends and my 7 year old daughter and husband. We had a truly invigorating morning, enjoyed a picnic there and spent more than 3 hours enjoying nature without realizing the time passing by. The only thing we could have done better is to have been at the park by 6.00 am (we went at 6.30).
Highly recommended for nature lovers and of course photographers... but do note that there is a lot of walking required but many places to rest along the way.
To end I want to say bravo to the SLRDC for this initiative (among many others of course) it gives a short but wonderful getaway!!!
