Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Even though there's not much to see the locals have worked so hard to keep the sanctuary alive to help the suffering turtles. The experience was very moving and changed my life. I did a TED talk on it in Indonesia at a school and have been donating money to the aid since 2010 and from the earthquake I'm still trying to gather money to donate to help them. This area should be conserved and taken care of and they are important. They clean the beaches and only the tourists can fund their care. Because of my support for them I was even allowed to help and host the annual Sea Turtle release. This was an amazing experience and I very much recommend it.

Due to the earthquake and tsunami, the structure and turtle holding tanks were damaged and determined unsafe. All turtles were released following the tsunami (there was no fear of them being caught by fishermen) and no new turtles are being protected at this time. They hope to complete repairs and help protect the next year’s hatchlings.

The turtle hatchery seems to be closed. The building was damaged by the earth crake but we dont know if that is the reason. Anyway it is totally dead so dont go to Trawangan for this reason. On the other hand there are many other reasons to go hear.

It is a turtle conservation that has some tanks to keep baby turtles until they can go to free life.

I would call this a scam more than a place where tourists can enjoy the process of turtle hatchery. The tank is dirty, the living condition of the turtles is not conducive and the staff certainly do not have any love and concern over the turtles.....It is just a form of business to milk money from the innocent tourists. Avoid at all cost.

Do not support places like this. Turtles need to put their eggs in sand, and baby turtles need to go straight to the ocean. They need to learn how to breathhold, find food and shelter. None of these things will happen in an overcrowded dirty tank. Dont fall for stuff like this, visit and support Gili Eco Trust instead.

The idea of the turtlehatchery is good but the turtles dont hatch in the hatchery, they do it on the beach..even the idea is ok,it doesnt work.Should continue to donate money but also tell the locals that this is not ideal.

Do not confuse this place with the real sanctuary on Meno (the one mentioned in Lonely Planet).

These guys are scammers, keeping their turtles in awful conditions so they can sell snorkelling tours off the back of it. They don't care about the welfare of the turtles. See points 4 and 5 below.

We unfortunately confused this place with the one on Meno and bought a snorkelling tour with them. This was terrible for several reasons.
1. In a five-hour tour we did about 45 minutes total of actual snorkelling.

2. At the end of the tour they wasted our time by stopping for an HOUR AND A HALF to have lunch on Air, at their restaurant of choice. They tell you that you only have 30 minutes on Air, to get you to buy food at their chosen restaurant rather than looking elsewhere.

3. They didn't bother to uncover the glass bottom at all, despite repeated requests.

4. Worst of all, the guide went to the bottom of the sea to lift a full-grown turtle from the bottom to the surface so we could see it. When we got out, my girlfriend raised concerns and the guy was completely indifferent to her. It's laughable that they call themselves a turtle sanctuary.

5. When we complained, the 'boss' was worse than uncaring, not even listening to our concerns as he messaged other people on his phone. He was aggressive, patronising, and belittled us for what we were saying.

They're a bunch of cowboys - and the guy called Jay is the slimiest one of them all.

The biggest regret of our five-week trip was giving these guys money, because we didn't do our research. Please don't make the same mistake.

Such a small hatchery in the middle of the main drag, we almost missed it.
It's pretty much run by an old local guy who just wants to make sure turtles survive in his waters.
It was clean and the turtles of various ages looked healthy and he was very proud of his work.
Worth a visit and a donation because there is nothing better than seeing a wild turtle when snorkeling or diving.
