About
The Kuressaare episcopal castle, also known as the Kuressaare Castle, was built in the 14th century. Today, the castle houses the Saaremaa Museum which is devoted to the island’s nature and history. A large part of the fun is exploring the warren of chambers, halls, passages and stairways, apt to fuel anyone’s fantasies. One room near the bishop’s chamber looks down to a dungeon where, according to legend, condemned prisoners were dispatched to be devoured by hungry lions (recorded growls reinforce the mental image). Legend also tells of a knight’s body found when a sealed room was opened in the 18th century, which has given rise to varying accounts of how he met his tragic fate. Upon discovery the knight’s body dissolved into dust but don’t worry, it’s since been re-created. There’s also interesting coverage of daily life under the USSR, including the interior of a typical apartment. On the top floor, the museum has wonderful views over the bay and surrounding countryside.

Castle in pristine condition, but...
Aug 2020 • Couples
I am kind of disappointed with this place. It is in a great condition and it has so many artifacts from even bronze age. Problem is that, there aren't any English explanation under the items they exhibit there, only Estonian and Russian. You can find some English explanation briefly on the posters on plates on the wall, and general info on the boards outside or on some brochures, not under the items shown. Considering that this castle and museum is maybe the biggest tourist attraction in this city and maybe in the island, it is just weird that they don't provide enough information in English. Also, I would have expected to see more medieval armor or weapon sets, tools and items reflecting the life and history of the castle but no.

Otherwise, there are interesting stuffed animals section. Also, quite detailed exhibition from Soviet time. In a medieval castle, where you expect to see the history and importance of that very castle. If you speak Estonian or Russian of course.

Another point; this castle is huge and it is like a maze. If you want to get a map, you need to pay for it. It is like 0.6 cents but this just feels like an opportunistic behaviour. I never had to pay for a map or a brochure of a castle here in Estonia before. Very interesting.

it's honestly one of the most interesting castle museums I've ever been to here in Baltics - you can spend easily hours there as there's many different exhibitions. On the top floor there's also cafe opened - good coffee!

Excellent castle to visit.

We had a guided tour in English to this castle/museum. It has been sympathetically restored and we could have spent much longer than the 2 hours we were there. Well worth a visit!
