Stunning gardens, amazing views but just too many old paintings
Aug 2020
This isn't a cheap trip. But I am really glad I made the effort because the island is just wonderful..
Boats to the island will set you back around 15 euros (which also take you to Isola Pescatori), while the entrance to this island and Isola Madre was another 24 euros.
But the cost is so worth it to experience the gardens alone - they are quite simply stunning. And in the lakeside setting, with mountains in the background, this place is perfection in so many ways.
The palace itself is gorgeous, although the three storey entrance hall was only completed after World War 2. I could have taken more recent information on the Borremeo family rather than the hundreds of old paintings that seemed to dominate every room.
I preferred the views from the different windows, and the gorgeous shell rooms in the basement area.
A warning - take your own water. I got stung for two Euros for a small branded plastic bottle - the Borromeo family must be running out of cash if they are having to stoop this low.

First trip abroad in 1957
Sep 2019
I was fortunate to visit Isola Bella around about 1958 when I was about 13 years old
This was my first trip abroad and have been thousands of miles since but still , I remember my trip to Isola Bella as though it were yesterday. The peacocks, the gardens (and fruit on the trees) and the palace.

Family Owned Island on Lake Naggiore
Sep 2019
Iola Bella is the largest of the Islands in Lake Maggiore, privately owned by the Borromeo Family, on which they have a beautiful family home filled with many family treasures and equally beautiful gardens both of which were open and well worth a visit.

Nice day trip from Baveno. Easy to find access to boats

This was an unexpected day tour. Loved the options. I did two islands. Plenty of shopping and food to choose from.

Incredible Palace
Oct 2019
Took the short ferry trip from Stressa to this magnificent island in Lake Maggiore. What strikes you instantly as you arrive is the imposing Borromeo Palace. We arrived on the backside of the island and did a bit of walking prior to lunch. All I can say is the food and service was magnificent. Take the short trip and enjoy this beautiful little island.

Stupendous Palace
Oct 2019
There's the Palace - which is huse and ornate, with a lot of paintings.
And the gardens - formal, adorned with statues and white peacocks.

I'd recommend going early or late in the season: in the peak months it gets very crowded. Early October was good: still warm enough to wander around in shirtsleeves, but not too busy. May would be good too - the azaleas would be blooming then.

There is a joint ticket with Isola Madre and Rocca d'Angera - that is good value.

There is a small café and a gift shop inside the gardens - there is a bigger choice of restaurants, gelateria, souvenirs beside the quays, once you have left the gardens.

Rest down the beach of Isola Bella
Oct 2019 • Friends
If you soaked in all the ancient beauty of Taormina make sure to take your way down to Isola Bella. Check the google map for the hundred steps staircase (dont walk on the middle of the narrow streets as there is no pedestrian walk on the main roads) to take you down right to the beach. Make sure you have beach shoes...its not a sandy beach 😉 But very beautiful to have a rest on or visit the islands hidden gardens.

More than just the Borromeo Palace
Sep 2019
While the Palace is well worth the short ferry ride from Stresa, there is more to this island gem in Lake Maggiorre. It offers quaint shopping. Be sure to explore the back lanes of the island. There are many different restaurants offering unique views. The main draw in my mind is the wonderful outdoor seating on patios, terraces, and sidewalks. The food is fine, but not fabulous. Definitely worth the short ferry ride.

Palacio isola bella
Oct 2019
Just writing to warn people that this is a hard place to visit if you are uncomfortable climbing endless stone staircases without any handrails. My husband had to give up and while I walk every day and don’t have arthritis, even I felt nervous.
