Antica Fornace Baiano is a genuine historical and cultural treasure -not to be missed- with beautiful pottery!ANTICA FORNACE DERUTA, located in the historic center, is always open. It is a genuine family run pottery shop, with an exceptional museum, a one-of-a-kind antique collection of pottery from the original largest pottery factory in Deruta complete with artists renderings and prototypes from over the centuries. Also inside the shop is the first kiln of Deruta, an Etruscan and Medieval pottery kiln to explore, with all of the artistic history of the birth of pottery in Deruta and fragments on display. Don't lose time and energy. ANTICA FORNACE DERUTA is the first place you need to see when you come to Deruta to understand and live again the history, the tradition, the passion, and the beauty that Deruta has given to the world for centuries through its art of hand painted pottery. Learn it from a family of quality artists and artisans, the Baiano family. The shop is open every day, all day. You will recognize the building by all the colorful pieces and shards of pottery embedded in the wall – always a favorite photo-op. The Baiano family lives above and is always available. Someone is usually in the shop, if not, either call up to the window ... Francesco! ... or call the son, Giovanni! who runs the shop and speaks English. In the shop, they sell all types of pottery using the unique designs from their collection for the table and home furnishings, wedding gifts and plates, and more. They also do custom table service in the antique style or from a piece of art that you like. When you buy a piece of pottery from ANTICA FORNACE DERUTA you bring an exclusively personal and unique piece into your home. We await your visit!

Not being much of a shopper or browser, most of the shops near the main square didn't catch my interest. This place, however, was worth the effort it took us to find it (not that hard, just not that good at directions!). We enjoyed our conversation with Giovanni, as well as our viewing of the museum, kiln, and contemporary pieces.... More

This gem of an attraction gives a good insight into all the pottery you see in the Deruta area. Giovanni Baiano is enthusiastic about the finding of the Etruscan furnace in what was his family workshop. Indeed he has a modern kiln and still produces small pieces on sight. He is keen to show off the various finds and the... More

If you are in Deruta, then you must be there for the ceramics as ceramics dominate the Old Town. We came upon this store by chance, following its sandwich board ad "off the beaten path" down to an amazing location. Within the store is an ancient kiln and also a museum-quality collection of not-for-sale ceramics - amazing to be shown!... More

Giovanni and his father were both so very gracious, as were their wives... Joan is a native English-speaker but Giovanni communicates easily also, and the quality and depth of the work they have on display is but a small portion of what is available through their workshop. They specialize in creating dinnerware sets on commission - for weddings, anniversaries, etc.... More

We visited Antica Fornace Deruta in May 2014 and was pleasantly surprised by the rich history and information buried in this interesting place. The owner is very pleasant and friendly and took time to explain the history of majolica to us and we also took the opportunity to buy a piece of majolica. Visiting Antica Fornace Deruta is free but... More

Giovanni's shop contains a wealth of history back to Etruscan times as well as beautiful new pieces lovingly crafted by hand. This is a majolica treasure in the heart of Deruta.

If you like Deruta pottery, this is a must place to go. It is a very small town, easy to navigate, friendly people and lots of fun. The pottery is beautiful and many artisans are represented in the town. Antica Fornace is an amazing place to learn the history as they have some really OLD pieces and examples of the... More

Our family had a lovely chance meeting with Giovanni's wife, Joan, who invited us to visit this charming shop. It was like taking a huge step back in time. Giovanni shared the history of his craft in loving detail. We felt like we were bringing home pieces of his heart. You must seek out this treasure.
