About
The stone castle started to appear on the place of the former Estonian stronghold in 1224. The fortress got its final shape and size in the beginning of the 16th century and was one of the distinguished fortresses in Estonia and Latvia. Due to wars between Sweden, Poland and Russia all that is left from the entire order castle today are just a few stone walls.Already in the beginning of the last century the ruins of the fortress and the park around it turned into a recreational area for the residents of Viljandi. In order to access the castle hills from town a rope bridge was build from the Kaeuvumagi hill over the 13 meters deep trench in 1931. From the ruins you have the most beautiful view over the lake of Viljandi.

Interesting ruins in a nice place. Some pieces that were bigger looked majestic. Magnificent views over the lake and far away over the forest behind the lake. If children are not careful then they may fall down over the edge somewhere so be careful!

The hill with Viljandi castle ruins is a beautiful place to admire the view to the lake. There isn't much to see history-wise but I would definitely recommend visiting during sunset, just to admire the view!

On a crisp September morning the views from the castle ruins over the countryside were beautiful and you could see why the fortress was situated here for a dominate position. Nice place to walk around and there are a few diagrams and signs to help understand the area and ruins. A few areas are roofed over to try and conserve those areas, but it is basically walls and foundations that are left. Very beautiful and there is a stage area and benches for performances of some kind? This is part of a larger park that has an iron bridge, church, paved trails, statues that is nicely maintained.

Just ruins, however still interesting to walk around and enjoy the views from the top of the hill. In the city center, so totally worth a visit

Pity there are just ruins and not the entire castle but still worth to visit in Viljandi (actually a must-be there). Castle moat is the most impressive, at least for me. A nice view for a lake. A famous place for concerts. Or why not to have a picnic there (just Aida Kohvik (Caffee) is so close there... see my comment about that :)

This can be a 1 hour sightseeing, or all day picnic and family event.
Good for couples or family to enjoy...or solos.
It's a historic ruin but also a wonderful park with beautiful view.
Highly recommend is you happen to be in the area.

These ruins are well worth a visit. It is a beautiful spot for a stroll and has some amazing views of Lake Viljandi. It is also right next to the Estonian Traditional Music Centre, which is also worth stopping by.

I thought that this was a nice place to visit even though the ruins are small. The various sections of fortifications are interesting and the view over the nearby lake is lovely. It is worth carefully reading the information boards or going with an excellent guide on our Tallinn to Riga minibus tour to fully understand the history of the castle.
