About
The park is located on the slope of the ancient valley and is named after the ruins of the order castle. When the town started to grow in the second half of the 19th century the need for a recreational zone arose. In 1863 the right to use the castle hills was received from the manor. The works were initiated in 1893.In 1925 the Varese sild (Crow bridge) was finished and connected the town with the park.Interesting to know:· the works where initially carried out by convicts. These were people who were bearing liability in the house of detention for whatever reason and were thereby able to shorten their sentence.A main component of the landscape of the park is the relief, the proximity of a body of water is also important.Take a look at the aerial panorama (picture by Joel Tammet).

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great place to visit with friends or family. Many people go there to hang out and spend time together. Nice and calm, worth a visit as it is very close to the city center.

Don't expect any interesting old castle ruins. But the park is very beatiful and you'll get a faboulus view over the big lake. As a child, if your parents didn't get you off a swing and you considered yourself the king of the swings...think again. Estonians are real hardcore swingers and build centurys ago this kind of old village swings. Definately worth a try for beginners and advanced swingers.

The place is easily accessible by car. The walking tracks are not hard so it is suitable for kids and elderly also.
Views are nice :)
It’s open 24/7 and on public holidays.
There is no ticket, there is a coffee shop in the area but when we visited it was closed for the holidays ( Christmas) but plenty other cafes around where to sit and have a bite to eat.

Great park to admire the view towards Lake Viljandi. Restful place, you can sit on the bench and have a minute of more for yourself.

The site includes a "village swing" on which up to 8 people can stand and swing up to fairly intense heights. These swings are something of an Estonian tradition (and maybe obsession); if you have a group, it's fun to try.

Viljandi, and in particular the castle ruins and surrounding park with the sweeping vista down over the lake, is perhaps my favourite spot in all of the country. Any time of the year the park makes for great walking, although it's certainly more colourful in summer and autumn.

Apparently this village swing would be used during festivals by a dozen people. Our guide said he has been on it and the energy required to make it really fly is exhausting. When we were there the swing was chained up so we couldn't test out how high we could make it go.

We enjoyed our visit here immensely it was so beautifully kept, ( as We found throughout Estonia).
There is a lovely peaceful feeling to the whole place even though there are little places to play and roll down little hills if you're under 20!!!
Throughout the park there are significant citizens memorials, please stop and look at them their stories are heroic and deserve to be honoured.
Take time and enjoy

Just in case - it is not easy to walk with baby-stroller - there are some places where must lift stroller to get through.
