My husband and I like to wander around ruins. This one is magnificent. As you come upon it, you see the front of the Abbaye, two massive towers, and a large hole where the rose window was. And then....nothing behind it. The building was destroyed...More

About 60 kms. from Paris, on the RN2 highway is situated the city of Soissons, known for the vase of Clovis, the cathedral and the St. Jean des vignes abbey. This is an imposing structure and the visit is free.

This facade is enormous! It is fascinating to read the information panels ( in English) and just wander around outside. There is a small museum with more information but unfortunately all in French. There is no entrance fee.

The ruins of St Jean des Vignes are the main tourist attraction in Soissons, The church is mostly in ruins apart from one face, but the monastic hall and other buildings have been beautifully restored. There is also an excellent explanatory centre on site. Access...More
