For once a sober interior of a Cathedral
Sep 2018 • Solo
When you are there go inside and see how sober the decorations are in this cathedral.

Work on the cathedral started in the 12th century. When you have been to Paris you may notice that the west tower looks like the towers of the Notre Dame of which it's a copy. The eastern tower was planned but never built

The ruins of the nearby church of Abbaye Saint-Jean-des-Vignes are more impressive so when you have little time I would go there.

Stained Glass
Oct 2018 • Couples
We've been visiting cathedrals through northern France. Each has something that makes it stand out. For me, at Cathedral Saint-Gervais Saint-Protais it was the area behind the altar which has several large stained glass windows. As you stand there, with the sun coming through, you are surrounded by beautiful colors in patterns that vary as you move through. It feels magical.

A Gothic Cathedral with a Rubens
Sep 2018 • Couples
A fine gothic cathedral with a superb deambulatory with five chapels and beautiful stained glass windows. But what surprised me was the splendid Adoration of the Shepherds by Rubens near the transept!

Beautiful Cathedral
Aug 2018 • Family
Cathedral was the highlight of an otherwise dull and dreary visit to Soissons which frankly felt like a total ghost town with most things closed and no people around aside from some shuffling youths swigging beer near the river.

Cathedral is free to enter and has some lovely paintings and stained glass windows, we enjoyed looking around, there is also parking nearby including 1 free car park.

A 12th century monument completed 2 centuries later
Aug 2018 • Friends
This cathedrale has an interesting history. Inside, it has very nice stained glass windows. Soissons is about 100 kilometers from Paris or 65 kms. from CDG airport by N2 highway.

This is a classic cathedral of France. Worth a visit if you need a little quiet or want to be impressed by the architects of the past.

Soissons is a famous French originally built by the Romans. The Cathedrale Saint-Gervais Saint-Protais was magnificent, especially the stained glass windows that remained after WWII. The size of the cathedral is immense and beautifully decorated. Its many manifestations are outlined so all can see what it has gone through. This cathedral and Soissons should not be missed.

A treat for anyone visiting Soissons
Sep 2017 • Family
It is quite breathtaking from the outside but once inside it simply takes your breath away. It is steeped in history with a fascinating story behind it. I can't really do it justice. All I would say is just visit and see for yourself. You won't be disappointed.

A wide open door and St Crispin's femur...
Jul 2017 • Friends
One of the first Gothic cathedrals in France (contemporary with Chartres) this has only one tower...a second one planned, but never built. The empty niches inside once held figures destroyed in the French Revolution; outside, the walls are heavily 'pocked' with holes, legacies of W.W.1, when the church was severely damaged.

But after the ornate facades of Laon and Amiens cathedrals, the plainness of the entrance was refreshing and the wide open door an invitation. Some insense hung around the altar, adding to the overall atmosphere of calm spirtuality. The semi-circular south transept dates from 1175, an architectural gem - though there are other treasures too, like the femur of St Crispin in a gold reliquary! There were few visitors around. No requests for money and no shop, though I did get a rosary ring for 1 euro, from a wooden stall in one of the aisles.

Soissons is a 25 minute train ride from Laon. About a 20 minute walk from the station to the cathedral, which may be closed at lunchtime. There's a nice restaurant nearby called La Galletiere, where we had crepes and a carafe of rose, then icecream and coffee for 26 euro.

Fun fact: Adolf Hitler got his Iron Cross in the Battle of Soissons in 1918.
