Happened upon this Memorial which is stunning. Handsome statue, and well written information on the very important battle that took place on these grounds with the standing wall area at the height of the battle. Thank you for this beautiful Memorial.

Beautiful Scupture

It is hard to believe that a terrible battle raged in this peaceful field over 100 years ago. It is well worth stopping and spending some time thinking of those young men of the 42nd Division who fought here. Many paid the ultimate price and are buried just up the road at the Oise-Aisne American Cemetery. May it remain this peaceful forever.

As one happened upon this memorial in the middle of the road, further on passed the Grand Rond, one had to pay tribute. Free entry takes you to a couple of displays of images from the Second War of La Rèsistance involvement and onwards through what looked to be a modern underground space. No literature or interpretation available. There was a man in an office on entry who acknowledged me with a gallic wave. Allow 10 minutes at least.

This monument is not that easy to find, but it is certainly worth the trip. In the midst of a field where the actual battle took place, this World War I monument honors the the 42nd Rainbow Division. I was informed that a comparable statue may be made and placed in Montgomery, Alabama.

Moving Tribute to Those Who Serve
Jul 2015 • Couples
This memorial was Privately, as in No government money, paid for including the land, bronze and upkeep of the site. I don't believe it is meant to educate but rather to make you feel the pain of the soldier holding a comrade who is mortally wounded in battle. We thought it was beautiful. Because this like many WW1 memorials are scattered throughout farmland, it is difficult to find, but that makes it better when you arrive. The NY Times did a fine series this year on sites, both famous and unknown. Look for them in their Travel Archive section.

Americans Should Understand This Memorial
Jul 2013 • Family
It is more than a tad disconcerting to see that an American made it all the way over to this part of France only to express "disappointment" upon visiting this site. The more impressive "other monuments to the Great War" were erected by states (Pennsylvania outdid itself in Varennes-sur-Argonne) or the National Geographic Society (a fountain in Cantigny) or by the federal government itself, which includes those memorials and facilities now administered and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission. The 42nd Division Memorial is largely the work of a single man -- N.T.Frazer of Alabama and, perhaps, a couple of friends -- whose father fought there. They had to assemble and purchase three separate parcels of land and commission a sculpture in the U.K. to complete this work. They paid for it themselves and it is nothing less than remarkable that they did so. It is now maintained by local French authorities, as best I understand. Sadly, there are nearby places -- near Roncheres, Cierges, Sergy and Courmont -- where Americans suffered thousands upon thousands of casualties in WWI and nothing marks their efforts and sacrifices at all. I just hope people will appreciate this memorial and learn something from it. There should be others like it.

Beautiful

A beautiful and stirring tribute to the Rainbow Division. I had not been to a WW1 battlefield before and this one is now mostly farmland again, devoid of the death and destruction which once plagued the area. It is a shame so many Americans will never see this memorial.

Disappointing Memorial
Mar 2013 • Couples
This memorial to the service of the Rainbow Division in both WWI & WWII is disappointing when compared to other monuments to the Great War. The visitor's center in Chateau-Thierry could hardly place it on the map for me.

A fantastic World War I monument that commemorates the courage and devotion of the 42nd Rainbow Division. The monument is a little off the beaten path, but well worth the trip!
