There are a number of companies offering marble tours in Carrara, but you should look no further than this company, and have Marco guide you for a truly excellent and professionally organised experience. Marco is multilingual; his English was impeccable and his explanation was both entertaining and informative. Every question was answered, as he carefully told the story of the quarrymen and the marble mines. What made his guiding unique was his family's three generation involvement in the industry, so Marco truly knew it all. By taking us to his family's mine, he was able to explain changes in the process from Roman times right through the years from when his father began mining. To actually see part of a Roman marble column at Cava 177 surrounded by currently mined marble was really exciting. The trip 1000 metres up to look over the whole valley was breathtaking. As well, Marco was able to clearly tell us about the changes taking place now with new international companies taking part in the process, the gradual improvement in conditions and health of miners over more recent decades, and the changes in technology, as well as discuss environmental considerations with us. This is one of the best tours we have taken in a long, long time, demystifying that amazing white scenery that has sat above Carrara for so many hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of years. Excellent tours rely on a guide who can weave a story to entertain and involve you while teaching you the facts in an understandable way. This is a rare gift, one that Marco certainly has.

Driving above Carrara in hopes of finding a marble quarry tour, we found Marco finishing up a group tour based at his family's small quarry at Cave 177. Marco, a 3rd generation quarryman, is personable, fluent in English, and deeply versed in the history of the region's quarries and the methods of marble work that have evolved over the centuries. We were able to see other, larger, quarries in the area as well, and a spectacular view of both the Medterranean and the next valley inland. Thank you Marco!
