Mounted according to instructions from the Marmo Tours site in Ravacionne. We are surprised by this road a little lost sometimes but it is so worth it.
Get into the mountain and this interior quarry by car.
Our Female Guide was at the top with excellent French and this accent ...
Frankly, positive for me, it’s something to do. Surprising.

Our visit to the marble mountains was one of the highlights of our two-week stay in Italy. Definitely recommended!
Before we went I was research online, and I was a bit confused by the different options that were available. When we got there, we found out that the visit to the "marble cave" was something completely different than the tour of the "marble mountains".
The marble cave is called the Fantiscritti cave and is basically a marble quarry operated inside one of the mountains (thereby creating a cave). There is one specific company that operates a 30 minute look inside this cave with some explanation as to how the marble is quarried. They can be found at www.marmotour.com. You can just drive up there, park your car and buy tickets for this tour without a reservation. Separately to that, there is also a company (right across from the cave) that gives tours of the mountain in 4x4 jeeps. There are also other local tour guides living in the area that provide private tours of the mountains in 4x4 vehicles. We visited the marble cave and we also had a private tour with a local tour guide (booked through our B&B). While we enjoyed both, the private tour in 4x4 Landrover jeep was more spectacular than the cave, and was something we really enjoyed.
I would also like to say that if you're going to this area, we found a great souvenir shop called La Piana on Via Colonnata. The people there were very nice, they had good quality merchandise and their prices were also very good.

A fun & adventuresome visit to a unique spot on our planet. The mountains & canyons of white marble gleamed in the bright sunshine as we ascended up the steep and rocky road. Our guide, Gabriele, kept us laughing and learning, as he taught us the geological history of this extraordinary place. We not only touched the spirit of Michelangelo, but found ourselves in the presence of all the beautiful buildings around the world that were constructed from this spectacular stone. A visit well worthwhile! - Judy U., Murrieta, California

Bad experience without having done the tour. I asked for info and quote. They sent him on a tour other than the one requested. Then they corrected saying that there was a typo (and already unprofessional: do not reread before sending an email???). Then I confirmed the Reservation but without having paid the deposit because I read the negative reviews. So for me, as in most cases, the Reservation was not valid. I point this out to Mrs (Mrs. is an understatement) Martina who accuses me of not having canceled (I do not understand what I had to cancel if nothing I had confirmed). After a polemical email and after my equally polemical Response, the aforementioned "lady" offends me by calling me rude and stating that reviews of their tours were written by people who, like me, SIN IN EDUCATION.
The members of this organization, given the previous reviews and my experience, do not know how to do their job.
I hope this review is useful not to rely on them

Sadly, this is my first bad review on Tripadvisor, I can only hope it will be my last!

I'll start off by stating that I assume, that this tour company is ranked #1 for a reason and being a person who's doing a thorough search prior to making a choice/purchase, their good reviews impressed me and that was the reason why I choose them for our shore excursion during our Mediterranean cruise stop at the port of Livrono.
I'm sure that if you get to do the tour you'll have a great experience, sadly that wasn't the case for us and it's a mistake that ended up costing us A LOT of money with no return!!

We opted to book with them a customized tour that included a pick-up from Livrno port, a tour at Carrrara quarries, transportation to Lucca with 2 hours of free time there and a transport back to Livorno port – all for a grand total of € 370 for 3 adults, which was paid for in advance (BIG MISTAKE!) via Paypal.
Communication with the tour company prior to the tour was great and everything looked rosy ahead of our arrival.
Having visited Tuscany area several times before, we were all excited and looking forward for this different experience.

Unfortunately, on the morning of our tour, our ship didn't make it to port due to bad weather – to be honest, we were amazed that such a big and modern ship (the Epic – Norwegian cruise line) wasn't able to make it to port and we weren’t expecting a bad weather (to this degree at least) in Italy this Late in June either.
The ship turned, headed back to sea and skipped this port.
We had no means of communications while on board, but either way, we had no knowledge of this port cancellation ahead of time and by the time we were notified about it and that the ship sailed away, the driver that was sent to pick us up would have already been at the port.
Upon our return home, I've contacted the tour company to check with them what are our options for a refund/partial refund, given that we didn't make it to port with no fault on our part.
They replied my email only after a second reminder email and stated briefly, that the way they see it, having sent a driver to pick us up and not showing up, they review this as a no-show and therefore they will charge us for the full amount.
For me, asking us to pay the full amount in this case, seemed to be unreasonable and unfair!
Don't get me wrong, I get it that they are based outside Livorno in Carrara (about an hour away) and therefore had expenses, hence I was more than willing to be fair and pay for that part (and then some), BUT NOT € 370!!
It just so happened that we've taken a privet transport a couple of days prior, for roughly the same distance/duration it took their driver to get from Carrara to Livorno and mind you, that was during the night when fares are higher, but even then, that special transport cost us "just" € 110.
And at the end of the day, it's not that we didn't show up, just because we didn't feel like it. We had no say in this port cancellation!

Taking all this into consideration, I have sent an additional email suggesting a fair compromise (in my opinion), in which they'll keep € 120 and partially refund us € 250.
It was sent last month and up to date (a month later), they didn’t even bother themselves with the courtesy of replying – IT SEEMS THAT ONCE THEY HAVE YOUR MONEY IN THEIR POCKET, THEY COULDN'T CARE LESS ABOUT YOU!

IN SUMMARY;
If you decide to book a tour with them and are either getting to Carrara by yourself, or if you don't mind risking whatever amount you are required to pay in advance, then go for it, based on other's reviews I can only assume (and hope) you'll enjoy it.

BUT, if you are traveling via a cruise ship or care about your hard earned money, then I suggest that after reading this review, you'll save yourself the trouble and disappointment and book this tour / shore excursion with another tour provider.
You should book it with another tour provider who do have a decent customer care before, during AND after the tour/booking.
And equally important, another tour provider, who offers a fair cancellation policy towards cruisers!!

Hi Guy, nice to see you are unable to accept also the decisions of a "super partes" judge like PayPal. As you perfectly know: You paid 3 tickets for an excursion by 4x4 starting from Carrara + a transfer with a minivan from Livorno to Carrara. We sent one of our minivans to Livorno to pick up the customer but the cruise ship did not moor the harbor. We can't feel us responsible about that and we had the costs of a transfer + 3 not saleable seats for the excursion. Following the International Convention on Travel Contracts this a perfect case of "CUSTOMER NO SHOW" because we sent the required minivan to Livorno and we reserved three seats on the 4x4 vehicle but nobody (independetly of our will) was using our services. Best regards Gabriele Giuntoni

I really desired to visite these marble quarries, over all because I am Italian and proud of our history. The area is interesting, but the experience I had is not to be repeated and strongly not recommended. It was just a ride by a off-road car, in the name of the business. Everything with rush, twice the same route with the aim of picking up a group of tourists (foreigners) and in a hurry again, since another group of tourist was waiting for the same tour. The guide spoke quickly to say much as possible in the less time as possible. 2 1/2 hours, including a journey from / to the train station (24 km). All this for 35 euros but I would not have done even for free !

We were very disappointed with two of the tour guides. When we arrived with our party of 3 they were annoyed with us and said we only booked for two. One of us had to sit on my lap for part of the trip until we joined another group. Our party was then split up for the entire trip. During the trip a different tour guide was extremely condescending when we asked a question about the caves. His response was”didn’t you read the tour description “. Later after the trip was over we received an email apology because they reread our confirmation email that had us reserved for 3 people. People make mistakes which is understandable. However rudeness is not an acceptable quality when you are conducting a tourist business. One should treat others as they wish to be treated. Very disappointed with the experience and it was very upsetting My friend who lives in Lerici use to highly recommend this tour but will not anymore.

22 guests coming from 5 different Nations were punctually at the meeting point. Only you was called 20 times from us because you didn’t understood the information given 20 times in the same way. All the other guest were waiting for you 25 minutes (hearing the guide explaining to you 20 times the same direction to follow) and you are disappointed???? I love the human being because is really incredible. Have a very nice day (if you are able to find the way to home)

If you want to be treated with respect, don't set your foot in the cars from this company. I have never met such a rabid Italian in my life.

Wow! What a day!! This tour is definitely a "must do" if you're near Carrara. Our tour guide, Heike, provided interesting information during the entire tour and we were able to stop to take as many photos as we liked. The roads are quite narrow and winding ... so keep that in mind if you're one that gets car sick. Otherwise, this tour was absolutely perfect!

In the beginning of May my husband and I visited Cinque terre and decided to visit the marble mountain of Carrara. I didn't know what to expect but it turned out to be the gratest day of our short vacation. It was a very exciting trip in 4x4 Landrover, we had a very pasionate and interesting guide that provided a lot of information about the history of production of marble, we saw the procedure of cutting of marble, got the information what it is used for (not only for the statues and in construction, but in the cosmetics and food industry as well!) . On the top of the mountain we had a wonderful view of quarries and the seaside. The journey on the steep dusty narrow roads made for the vans that come to get the marble was quite adrenaline. The guide (a German woman living in Italy) was a fantastic driver. She said that we had nothing but to trust her -:).
In the end we were all fascinated and satisfied. The trip gave me a complete different view on the statues, great churches and other buildings all over the Italy, made of the pieces of the white mountain.

I highly recommend this trip and thanx to the guides again. You were great!
