Vaux le Vicomte is the creation of three men brought together by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis 14th's finance minister, the landcape architect Andre le Nôtre, the architect Louis le Vau and the painter-decorator Charles le Brun. The perfect harmony between architecture and landscape is the result of their collaborative genius. From its unveiling at the famous fête of august 17th, 1661, Vaux le Vicomte aroused the envy of the Sun King and became the model that inspired the whole of Europe, including Versailles.Vaux le Vicomte can be visited during the day or at night with 2000 candles (on Saturdays from may to beginning of october)Easy access by train or by bus from paris.

Make the interior of the chateau unbearable. There's no way to get round them as the passageways are so narrow and the interior visit takes probably double the time that it should. Gardens, however, beautiful

We went to the castle for a family day for my moms birthday. It was the first day of Christmas decorations in castle. It was beautiful. We even rented costume for our little 5 & 6 year olds. Finished off the visit with horse carriage ride.

Louis XIV has been so impressed when he visited this chateau that he took all the artists to Versailles and then built his own palace. We suggest a night visit ( Saturday..) to feel the real atmosphere of the XVII century. A fairy tale !

Compared to Versailles, Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte is, hands down, the more rewarding visit. Besides being smaller and thereby more intimate, the layout of the rooms is more sensible and inviting. Unlike Versailles, Vaux has a "warm" feel. I could imagine humans living there, unlike the cavernous layout at Versailles.

Visited this chateau with 3 children (aged 11, 7 and 5) during October half term this week as we wanted to see a bit of French history. Really enjoyed the time spent - we opted for a family ticket to see inside the house and spent a good while inside browsing from room to room. We took an audio guide... More

Yesterday we visited his stunning Chateau. As we didn't want to do 2 chateau in one day we opted to travel to the chateau by train and shuttle bus. The trip there went well and we loved the chateau. It is beautifully preserved and the gardens are stunning. However, no shuttle bus at the appointed time. It was almost 40... More

Le Nôtre's garden by candlelight is predictably magical. It would be pointless to elaborate, so here are some recommendations instead. If you're torn between a picnic and the restaurant, pack your basket. The restaurant is beautifully situated. However, the food is mediocre and leaves one with the impression that being served is a formality before the bill. Do enjoy champagne... More

The most exciting discovery for me was this exquisite Chateau just 1 hour from Paris near Fontainebleau!! Set in the most beautiful manicured gardens this palace is simply exquisite, authentic and charming - a rival to Versailles but without the long queues!! The restaurant's menu was excellent, fresh and very reasonably priced. To take a trip back into French history... More

Undoubtedly a stunning chateau with a fascinating history. It is well worth a visit if you cannot get to Fontainebleau or Versailles. However, having paid the entrance fee, the audio guide was extra and then there was another extra fee to go inside the dome of the roof. The lay down of the garden is impressive, but it seemed devoid... More

We had a trip to Paris planned when we first learned of this wonderful place in an article in the Wall Street Journal. My husband and I had both been to Paris separately several times for business and so we were looking for different things to do as we had already seen most of the big sites. So when we... More
