Vaux le Vicomte is the creation of three men brought together by Nicolas Fouquet, Louis 14th's finance minister, the landcape architect Andre le Nôtre, the architect Louis le Vau and the painter-decorator Charles le Brun. The perfect harmony between architecture and landscape is the result of their collaborative genius. From its unveiling at the famous fête of august 17th, 1661, Vaux le Vicomte aroused the envy of the Sun King and became the model that inspired the whole of Europe, including Versailles.Vaux le Vicomte can be visited during the day or at night with 2000 candles (on Saturdays from may to beginning of october)Easy access by train or by bus from paris.

My childhood best friend and I took a trip to Paris over the summer and this was of the highlights! To kick off our journey, our first day staying in Paris we took the train to Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte. We wandered around the grounds until sundown when they lit up the entire chateau with candles and passed around champagne. It... More

Fun to plan our train and bus trip, and then a wonderful day wandering around ... wish we had known to add the little town and castle nearby, too ... next time! (Get one of the little "golf" carts early, drive it all around the gardens, take it back, get coffee and a croissant and then walk the gardens. Picture... More

I don't have enough space to describe the beauty of the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte. Just an hour outside of Paris by car. Exquisite gardens, an outdoor cafe that serves delicious sandwiches and wine, open lawns for picnicing, napping or stargazing and golf carts the expansive grounds. If you are looking for a place less crowded with tourists and more intimate... More

Go and see Vaux-le-Vicomte! It is very historically significant for landscape design, architecture and interior design. It is not as grandiose as Versailles but this is where so many of the creative ideas were initiated. Without the ingenuity and boldness of Nicolas Fouquet it would not have been built. Louis XIV became jealous. Imprisoned Fouquet for life. Then built Versailles.... More

I wasn't expecting to find such a great and well preserved place so close from Paris. During the visit, you will walk through rooms full of history and beautiful ornaments displayed in a realistic way, transporting you to the 17th century and giving you the feeling of the real life in a magnificent French castle. The gardens are also an... More

Visiting Vaux-le-Vicomte was one of my main reasons for visiting France again. I had been to Versailles previously, and I loved it. The reason I went to Versailles first was that I had no reliable, affordable way of getting to Vaux. Now that there is a shuttle service available from the RER stop, it's quite accessible from Paris! (If you... More

We took the train from Paris to Melun and then a cab to the Chateau. This was on the last Saturday in September so we could see the Chateau de Vaux-le-Vicomte by candlelight. Getting there around 3 pm we had plenty of time to have a quick lunch, see the house and rent a golf-cart to enjoy the gardens and... More

My daughter and I booked this chateau tour, dinner and light show months in advance of our trip to France. We were delighted with the chateau, the dinner and the show. It is well worth taking the time to see. I would suggest making this at least a half day trip to really see the grounds and chateau before dark.... More
