For the iconis photo, walk the perimiter

Reconstructed Citadel gives you a feel for what life was like a long time ago. Beautiful architecture and amazing views of the city from inside. Don't skip the IT museum - it's fun and the curator a lovely guy happy to entertain guests. At the history museum, take your time! There's a good deal to read about the history of Afghanistan. For that iconic shot of the Citadel walls, walk the surrounding road. And by all means - ask to see the kings bath!!

If in Herat, you must see
Oct 2017 • Business
Although Herat is obviously not a tourist destination, this venue is a must see if you find yourself there - most likely you are employed by a govt agency or NGO that has prepped you for the social norms of the area. Dress conservative with headgear, sunglasses and stay respectful and low key. There is a low charge for entry and another charge for a small museum inside. I had an interpreter from Herat who helped gain me access to areas that I am sure would not have been open to westerners without a connection. It is being renovated and has been cleaned up nicely. Herat is probably about the safest location in Afghanistan, just do your homework and always be aware of your surroundings.

A gem to see
Dec 2017 • Business
Herat citadel is a gem to see close up. It has over 3000 years of history. I visited the citadel before restorations and after and it keeps getting better and better. Seen many castles around the world but this is different. You will not regret seeing it upclose and live. To walk the halls that Alexander the great had walked and many kings and queens after him. It is best to visit the citadel with accompanied by an Afghan as you get to see many other locked up places like the the tub the queens used to bath in. The old jail cells. The views of the castle and Herat city are amazing from any part of the castle. It is picturesque. The beauty is mindblowing. If in Herat even for a day make a trip to see this gem that you will remember for ages and stories to tell your grandkids about. Tickets for the citadel is around 500 Afg which is around $10 and cheaper for Afghans and seperate charge for the museum which is also inside the citadel. Museum is small but informational and of course good learning experience as you are there anyways.

An overwhelming experience
Aug 2017 • Friends
I have more than 40 years of personal history with Afghanistan. I saw the citadel when the country was very peaceful, I saw it again 10 years later after it had been severely damaged in the conflict - shell casings scattered around. This past year I visited once again and was astonished at the success of restoration efforts. It truly is a memorable experience, not only because of the amazing architecture, but just knowing you are following the footsteps of Alexander the Great as you move throughout the complex

Beautiful, must see attraction
Sep 2016 • Business
The Citadel of Herat, also known as Alexander's citadel, has been lovingly restored by the Aga Khan Foundation and is an example of how culture can lead in transforming a nation that has been at war for several decades. Its ramparts give you a stunning view of the complex.

Very attractive place to visit. The citadel of Herat was completely renovated between 2006 and 2011. The citadel is clean and foreign visitors are allowed to enter the citadel with a fee.
