Great Little Museum for both Mining and Town Life

We thoroughly enjoyed this little museum. The town's history is based on mining (Martha Mine and other area mines) so a lot of the exhibits hark back to mining, but there is a lot that gives you an idea of what it was like to live in Waihi in the past. My husband is a mining geologist so he really... More

This didn't take us long. The kids were fascinated with some of the exhibits. You must stop in and have a look at the pickled thumbs. That was ununexpected! The jail is hillarious! The "men" in there look like Zombies. There is a charge to get in. Can't recall how much.

If you view the Martha Mine and/or do the Gold Mine tour then it's worth finishing off here at the museum. Gives an overall view of all the mines. We found it interesting

If you have made the effort to climb the hill to see the Martha Gold Mine, then you may as well check this building out,as you will walk passed it anyway. When we visited, it was a damp and very overcast day which gave the building a dark foreboding look, the look of a movie set that Alfred Hitchcock (If... More

Very expensive souvenirs, the staff went ballistic when I took a photo of a family friend and I got sent out as there was a sign saying no photos. I would have known I wasn't allowed to take photos of it was clearly displayed, not behind a piece of sale item... Otherwise great stock in store.

Amazing history from yesteryears. Local icon in the middle of the town that was moved in one piece some years ago. Nice walk that most people can easily do around the rim pit with points of interest on the way which is well worth doing.

I don't know how they did it but they apparently moved the pumphouse -what you see in the picture- 300m to be able to preserve it. Waihi is full of stories and nice surprises for travellers. I can honestly say that I am glad that I had a break here.

The Museum has a plethora of local history and is a great source of information for genealogists with family in the area. There are working models, and exhibits - the cells from the old police station!! The Art Centre holds many exhibitions during the year for artists locally and nationally.
