Fun experience for families with the option of sitting inside or outside. The volunteers were really friendly and entertained the kids by pointing out interesting items hiding along the railway line. Good value for money. Lovely cafe with home baking in the restored Waikino Station at the end was worth the trip alone.

She was chuffed to bits and the driver was so lovely with her, even letting her honk the horn on the return trip. Lovely scenic trip and waving at the cars and trucks to get them to honk their horns was... More

I have recently resided near the Waikino station where this train stops and my elderly parents came to visit over the Summer. My father is quite immobile so finding things for him to do required thought. My father loves trains so we spent a wonderful afternoon on the sedate and quaint ride from Waikino to Waihi and back again followed... More

Today we (3 adults and 4 children) had the pleasure of traveling on the train to Waihi and what a wonderful experience it was. We would highly recommend this trip to anyone with children as the journey is the perfect length of time to captivate and entertain them. The volunteers onboard were a wealth of knowledge and most interesting to... More

Memories are sometimes the most valuable thing that we can own. Today our family created some of, what will become, some of he most treasured memories in our life. The train ride was fun! The staff were outstanding. ' you're a legend George'. This is a great trip for kids. The view is great. The waikino train station was lovely,... More

Really good value trip on the diesel hauled train. Friendly staff (mainly volunteers) preserving a piece of NZ history. If you have a bike for the bike trail better still.

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip on the train. It was well worth it. The staff were very friendly. 30 mins on the train was just the right amount of time for the kids. We got to get off for 40mins and walk through some bush tracks and over the river was just beautiful and intriguing for all of us. We... More

Very friendly staff who are keen to share their passion for trains and history of the Rail way. A special thing to do with great walks and cafes in the gorge.

We camped next to the rail line - lots of families enjoying themselves going on the train up to waikino and Victoria Battery where there is a coffee shop at the station and a museum plus walk around the old gold refinery ruins
