Something different
Sep 2021 • Couples
We did the blind tasting.
My partner who is not a huge whisky fan enjoyed it - and thought it was really fun.
I have to agree it was good entertainment and was a breath of fresh air from some of the other more traditional tours we had done.
Upon reflection I think it was reasonable value for money. They gave us 20% off at the store, so this softened the pricing.
You’re paying for entertainment value really. So it’s a question of whether you want the enjoyment of the puzzle of a blind tasting, or if you value the cost of the underlying whiskey samples as the worth of the event (which will no doubt be much less than £40)

Blind Tasting Leaves You Blind
Aug 2021
I booked the "Speyside Collection Tasting" for £40 and was really looking forward to the chance to "find single cask editions, cask strengths and few surprises," as described on their website. Well, the big surprise was that the tasting was completely blind using blackout glasses. If you didn't already know how impossible it is to guess age, ABV, and some aspects of cask storage, or agree on the intricacies of flavour profiles with anyone else, then this is the tour to dispel any notions that you really know what you are talking about when you are tasting whiskies with other people. Seven of us (including one new employee of Aberlour) spent 90 minutes blathering on about their opinions, which all differed, and were basically as accurate as flipping a coin. I learned very little about the whiskies we drank because it was all revealed in the end in a very rushed manner. There weren't great instructions at the beginning to tell us what to expect and the pourings seemed very meagre so you didn't have enough to go back and forth again and again to really compare. They gave us 3 of the blacked-out glasses to take home so you could "repeat the experience with your friends" but this is a terrible idea unless you just want to pop the bravado of your most annoying blowhard friend. (And if you have one of those, get a new friend.) Otherwise, why would I ever want to drink out of a glass I can't see through?? I immediately binned those. I guess the only good point was that I didn't really love any of the whiskies so I wasn't torn between my annoyance with the tour and wanting to buy anything. I'll be moving on for my future explorations and purchases.

Fun blind tasting
Aug 2021
Did the Speyside collection tasting the other day. Our tour guide was fantastic, and she made it a fun blind tasting by giving us a dram of the new make and the 16 yo but then having us guess which of the four other glasses (all of which were black to hide the colour of the whisky) contained Aberlour. A lot tougher than one might think, and she definitely threw a few curveballs to make it more interesting. Very cool stuff!

Disappointing but good for beginners
Aug 2021 • Friends
As avid drinkers of Aberlour we were excited to get a tour and tasting. Unfortunately on arrival we were notified that the tour wouldn’t go ahead due to important structural works.
The tasting was average at best. The gentleman was knowledgable and friendly but the samples were small and if very common drams.
Also learnt that colouring is added to some bottles which ruined the brand for me.
Overall it’s a nice and relatively cheap tasting but not worth it if you’ve experienced other tastings.

Amazing
Jun 2021 • Couples
Amazing experience and service.
We went for the testing experience which was great especially with the added fun of them being in black glasses.
We didn’t try just the standard bottles but some small batches and individual casks (which would have otherwise been out of our price range)
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff but in a relaxed way. Felt like you were chatting to an old friend.
The service was amazing. We were running 15 mins late and they still accommodated us and the dog (not allowed inside but was made very comfortable in the door way so she could see us - luckily it was a dry day)

Brilliant Blind Tasting at Aberlour
Oct 2020
Brilliant blind tasting at Aberlour.
Really well organised , we felt very safe in these Covid times .
Michelle made the tasting really good fun (blind tasting in darkened glasses so you cant see the colour!) and we had some great drams.
Very many thanks to Michelle and Ricky. This is one of our favourite locations in Speyside.

We moved to Carron in December 2019, beautiful part of Scotland and 10 mins from Aberlour and their distillery, the distillery is beautiful and the host was very knowledgeable and friendly, polite and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

Wonderful Whisky tasting with a super host
Sep 2020
We visited Aberlour on the 23rd September for a tasting, it was excellent, our host Jonathan was very informative and we even found it that he used to live near us, he explained the process from start to finish in a simple but descriptive manner, the whiskies were superb. Then in to the shop for a sneaky purchase, they have taken Covid very seriously with their strict measures and it never took the shine off, what was a super morning, thank you to everybody involved.

Many thanks for visiting us and for your very kind review.
It was my pleasure to give your group the Tasting. It was also great to meet folks from my old stomping ground!
I am so glad you had fun and that you enjoyed the Whisky.
Hope to see you again in the future.

Is it possible to do a whisky tasting without participating in a tour?
Anders W

Yes, we booked the ”Casks from the past” which was just a tasting. I thibk they’ve changed their tasting for this year, but it’s easy to find the ”non-tour” tasting on the website

Is the tour wheelchair accessible? (perhaps with a little help)

Dear Gerard
Thanks for your message.
Sadly as our buildings are very old, the tour is not accessible by wheelchair.
However our shop is via ramp, and we always happy to assist.
Kind Regards
Jonathan
Can I still pour my own bottle of whiskey from the cask here?

Hello, due to the length of the tour and the tasting at the end our tour is for over 18's.
Maybe check The Malt Whisky Trail for distilleries that are open to the public that allow children on their tour.
Thanks

Hello!!!! Ok, need some help booking a night or two in Aberlour in June of this year. My husband and I are huge fans of your single Malt, but our kids (ages 13 and 14) are not!!! Can you give us some advice on where to stay and if theres stuff for the tweens to do? I have been to Aberlour before but its been 20 years!!!! We'd like to stay June 9-11th and looking for a budget friendly one that we could get to by train/bus from Edinburgh and still do a tour with you all. Can you give me a few names you'd recommend?

Can't help with bus however I understood there is service. We had a rental car. Nice pub with hotel very close by is the Mash Tun, we met a couple that was staying there and they liked the accommodations. The Cooperage might be a place to spend some time with the tweens watching the artisans at work and they can try their hand at miniatures. We saw several people on bikes moving to and fro as well. There is a pretty hike rather short directly beside the Distillery where there is a waterfall and nice and potential picnic no benches just rocks and view. None like CO where you are from.
