Home to Manukura, the only white kiwi in captivity, Pukaha Mount Bruce is a 940 hectare unfenced wildlife reserve only 24kms north of Masterton, in Wairarapa, open every day (except 25 December) from 9am – 4.30pm. Pukaha Mount Bruce has six daily talks and feeds starting with takahe at 10.30, tuatara at 11.30, kiwi chick or gecko talk at 12 noon, eel feed at 1.30, kokako talk at 2.15 and kaka feed at 3pm. Visitors can see rare and endangered NZ birds in aviaries but also other NZ birds such as tui, fantail, kereru and rifleman living wild in the forest. Pukaha Mount Bruce has a kiwi house with 2 resident kiwi, an egg and chick nursery, a theatre with three short films and an interactive gallery. There is a two hour loop walk through regenerated native bush and a shorter aviary walk. If you are in a hurry, book a 1 hour guided tour or if you want to get up close and personal to NZ nature, how about a 2 1/2 hour Behind the Scenes Tour?

We took our German exchange students here to see the new zealand wildlife. The kokako was awesome, she talked to us and wolf whistled, the kakas were cheeky, saw the white kiwi Manukura and fed the giant black eels. It's not an adventurous day out...More

I've driven past her dozens of times over the last few years and always comment about how we should stop - we finally did and it is well worth it. They are doing a great job at breeding rare NZ birds, and telling the story...More

Extremely boring. Not much to see. Only saw the white kiwi bird which was not very impressive. Thought that there'll be more kiwi birds for viewing. Saw a staff smoking when clearly no smoking is allowed in that area. Disappointing, not worth $20

This is an excellent place to stop over for a couple of hours if you are driving along route 2. You get a lush bush location, a huge variety of native birds very close up - either wild nearby, in aviaries or in a super-aviary...More

I can't believe I have never been here before. It is a real highlight if you are visiting the Manawatu. There are many beautiful native birds, trees and Manakura, the white kiwi, who came within touching distance of us in her little kiwi house. The...More

We had a glorious day to wander around Pukaha - the environment is a fantastic complement to the native NZ birds and reptiles - at one stage we were the only people in the Kiwi house and had Manukura, the rare white Kiwi all to...More

I've been twice, once with a guide and once without. The guide was amazing and told the stories of the birds as we went past the various enclosures and really brought it all to life. She also helped us to find the birds in... More
