About
Llyn Brenig Visitor Centre hosts a welcoming cafe with home made cakes and hot food. The Centre also runs a bike hire facility to help visitors explore the extensive track network around the lake. Permits can be bought for fly fishing on the lake, and also to hire fishing boats. The lake is stocked with trout reared on the Llyn Brenig fish farm. Picnic tables and an adventure playground are also available to use. Note that the postcode for the area is large and using a Sat Nav may bring you to the Alwen reservoir, not Llyn Brenig. However, there are frequent brown road signs to help you find Llyn Brenig.

Fantastic day, great staff, really friendly vibe to the whole thing and caught some fabulous fish. What more could you ask for? The scenery of Cymru with fish!

Rather mundane
May 2021
I went primarily to walk around the reservoir with no intension of going in the visitor centre. My starting point was on the north eastern side at Boncyn Arian. Note that the access road from the B4501 is full of pot holes - care required if you dont want to damage the suspension on your car. The toilets here are closed and boarded up which is a pity as you are some distance from the visitor centre. The track around the reservoir is largely fairly good and many sections are drivable. There are ample picnic benches around the visitor centre and many in good sheltered positions. Most of the western side of the reservoir is surrounded by forestry and so few views of the water. There is a good path over Bryn Maen but further east, the path is ill defined where it passes on the western side of woodland at Bwlch-du and in places there are a couple of fairly wet bits to cross so if you haven't got the right footwear it is better to go via Bwlch-du. Finding the path in the opposite direction from the lane would be guesswork. Overall the walk is fairly mundane with little of interest other than the archaeological sites. The walk around the reservoir should take 3-4 hours.

Trout and Brekky
May 2021 • Family
I used to fish Brenig about 20 years ago when the woodland cam down to the water in most parts of the lake. Seems that much of the woodland had now been harvested and so it was weird that the place I once knew so well took a bit of working out in terms of favourite spots and the like.

My son and I took a boat in cloudy/sunny intervals with moderate breeze. Fishing seemed to be best in the Nant Glyn shoreline and in short time we had a few fish in the boat with traditional wets moved briskly on an intermediate

Stop for a Kelly kettle tea in one of my favourite locations up the top end of the lake made for a great day

I should mention.... our full Brenig fry up was excellent and the ladies serving very welcoming and cheerful. A great start to our day.

Love it there ...

Great venue pity about the selfish fishermen
May 2021 • Solo
I've fished Llyn Brenig for about 5 years now and it saddens me that every time I go there's a hard core of anglers who park in the disabled parking areas by the lake. They are lazy and selfish and the people who run the place need to get a grip on these selfish morons. Apart from that it's a lovely venue.

Cycling the lake.
Nov 2020 • Couples
Purely from a cyclist point of view, the paths are wide and varied and beautiful scenery. Air is clean and sweet smelling. Not many people around so no need to play dodge-em. It was rather windy, drizzly and cold. But, expected this time of year. Paying parking fee online was easy. The toilets could do with modernising.

Like you imagine Wales to be.

The 15 mile walk around the two lakes of Llyn Brenig and Llyn Alwen is an absolute beauty of a walk. If you like it a bit more rugged and wild, go elsewhere. If you just want to switch off from map reading and all that malarkey, just have a day of putting one foot in-front of the other in a place that offers up a lovely mix of lakeside, moorland and forest trail, it’s a great spot. The paths are well maintained all round, making them a good bet for a family day out on bikes, or a decent run, or pleasant walk. The only minor criticisms would be that the last little bit of the circular walk would be much sweeter if we didn’t have to share it with cars on the narrow entrance road, a nice grassy path here would be perfect. Signage for the “Two Lakes Route” could be improved around Brenig, but we found the route easy enough. With the clear evidence of investment into the paths, the £2.50 for all day parking seems reasonable to me too. I guess if you’re just nipping to the cafe for a brew that might seem expensive, but then, if that is all you do here you’re missing out, and it’s your own fault.
