We recently drove Route 309 out of Whitianga to Coromandel, very much enjoying this 22 kilometre stretch of uneven, windy roads, that scale up and down hills and place you in some lovely country in Coromandel. In addition to enjoying the actual drive and scenery,...More

We stopped at a garden centre on the outskirts of the town of Coromandel. A lady there asked where we had driven from. We said from Whitianga, along the 309. The look on her face said everything from WHY? To, ARE YOU INSANE? The 309...More

Try to avoid it!!! it is two way, narrow, no paving, sliding gravel.. so, get away... do not, never, avoid!

Warning This is a precariuous road that is unsealed, very narrow and not a good road to take. I advise choose another route - go the scenic route - in winter the 309 washes out & loses gravel so becomes muddy & slippery, in summer...More

Rough windy road with some nice views. Interesting Wild Pig farm about half way. Nice waterfall quite close to the road which would be a great place to cool off on a warm day. Probably more pleasant to do on weekday when not so much...More

The road has a mix of unsealed and sealed stretches and some tight bends. It’s an interesting drive especially when you see pigs running around on the road with babies in tow. They look like Kune Kune pigs. Lots of photographic opportunities with rusty old...More

Drove from Whitianga to Coromandel, pretty typical country road, not very wide, largely unsealed & windy, but worth the drive & stopping at the falls & seeing all the pigs on the road

Although it was unsealed the 309 is very civilised and easy to travel on. Along the way you can see the pigs, waiau falls and the kauri grove all worth stopping for

I hate heights and I hate windy, narrow gravel roads. The 309 combines all of these. I felt sure we would go off the edge . My poor partner, who was driving, had me barking at him he whole way to slow down. There was...More

This is a beautiful road but also dangerous. As a person who has had family members involved in a tragic accident on this road that claimed multiple lives I would plead that you only drive it if you are very confident on windy gravel roads...More

We didn't know what we were getting into driving The 309 at night but it was fun. Most of the way is gravel/unpaved. The switchbacks are very tight in some places.

This is the road where nightmares are created. I have never been so scared as I was driving this road. No one tells you how bad it is and once committed you can't turn back. Do not believe your GPS it lies. Two cars can...More

Don't even bother to go on the road. It is a disaster waiting to happen and I agree about the pigs. After mentioning the road to some locals they all asked if we stopped at the wild pigs. We stopped to take photos but didn't... More
