The road is a bit hairy as its windy and gravel, but it is so pretty and worth the drive but be careful. The pig place is worth a stop. They will come to you! Theres heaps of them. We were lucky to see a baby one not very old. So cute. Take it slowly and enjoy the scenery.

The tourist places will tell you to go the long way. If your confident to drive gravel the 309 is a great, well maintained road which is less nauseating and more fun!

This road is gravel, very narrow in places, and not a good drive after extremely heavy rain. It is a much shorter option than state highway 25 between Coromandel town and Whitianga. The animals - (pigs and tame chooks) are a real drawcard for lots of folk as theywander across the road by the dozen, with the friendly landowner chatting... More

Very exiting ride indeed. Part of the gravel road is washed down by heavy rains and is extremely narrow. You can fall 100 meters down if you are not careful. Amazing views from the top of the hill. End of the road you find hippies selling fruits among other interesting things. About half way is Manuka honey farm where prices... More

Nice little dirt road seeing Stuart and his pigs. We took some bread which the pigs loved and you have a chance to hold the piglets

This road between Coromandel and Whitianga has two great attractions- The Waterworks themepark and Waioua Falls. Don't miss them- especially if you have kids for the themepark. Could have better signage at the Whitianga end though as the road is not clearly labelled.

Stewart is a very friendly chap. He has lots of pigs. Captain cooks' kuny kuny pig. Black, ginger also dalmatian colour. They are his pets. Lots of piglets and chooks too. Unique, quaint one of a kind .

The 309 road is not for the faint hearted or those prone to car sickness but its a great scenic drive if you can take the time to enjoy the views, the busy, some of the stops and just enjoy the quietness and beauty of Coromandel. Its a long winding route from the West to the East (or visa versa!)... More
