Panorama opportunity
Sep 2021
The tower is is the rest of a former church. In times when building materials were rather few people reused the rest of the materials to rebuild the church elsewere after the sea was gaining land after huge storms. The tower is givng a good overview of the surroundings and is good for making panorama pictures from above.

Amazing view and nice legend
Feb 2020
The stumb tower in Koudekerke is linked to a legend. The tower is the only remaining building from the town. The inhabitants caught a mermaid and let her die. Her husband cursed the town in response. So a storm destroyed it all and left only the tower...

Not a must see, but go there if you're in the area

The Plompetoren is an abandoned medieval church tower. You can climb it free of charge. The stairs are quite narrow/steep at times, but the climb is definitely worth it. The views from the top are really nice, there even are binoculars free of charge up there. Inside the tower there is an exhibition about the sea life there (in Dutch).

Nice view, interesting history
Aug 2018 • Couples
This solitaire tower is the last remaining building of the town Koudekerke, which was lost in one of the many floods the island had to suffer in it’s history. The tower is beautifully restored into an interactive but still authentic looking attraction. The view on the top is spectacular with the Oosterschelde in the south and the dunes of the coastline in the northwest.

Great views and history

A visit to the Plompetoren is a real must when you visit Schouwen. Entry is free, and from the top one gets excellent views over a varied landscape where land and water alternate, The tower is one of the few tangible remains of the many villages in Zeeland that were lost to the sea. Inside the tower, the legend of the mermaid is told, which led to the loss of the villages of Koudekerke and Westenschouwen. There is also information about the creatures living in these waters. When I visited, an enthusiastic volunteer from Nature Monuments was explaining a lot about the wildlife.
