Best place to start a visit to Coevorden
Dec 2019
Wonderful small museum about the history of Coevorden. Very nice into-film; interesting exhibits and nice/interseting viewboxes with story-telling (dutch&german only). Very friendly staff.

One floor museum with history of Coevorden
Apr 2018 • Solo
The museum is in a recently renovated old building that also houses the tourist office and the library. The small museum is housed on one floor of this former warehouse at the harbour.

When you watch a short movie first you get a good idea of the violent history of Coevorden. Being on two important crossroads and the border with Germany it has always been occupied and conquered by various armies.

The exhibition follows the history chronologically so start at the right end.

There are interesting artefacts and little stories.

Great movie on Coevorden's history and very welcoming staff

We felt very welcome in this museum. The movie on the violent history of Coevorden is super. It uses a relief replica of the city as projecting screen. The language of the twelve minute movie can be set to Dutch or German, no English unfortunately. Perhaps that can be a new project for the museum.

Nice little museum for the history buff

Loved my one hour at this museum above the local libary, in a nicely restored building that was used by the army in the long and partly violent military history. The museum tells the story of the only castle in Drente province, it also has a good movie about the history of Coevorden and a few fun displays where a story is told in a headset. If you come with two one has to wait but I consider that a charming feat. This is a really a nice, well run small local museum where everyone who is not from Coevorden will learn something. The story of the battle of Ane is fun but the local Romeo and Julia story is much more charming. It looks like most of the museum is focused on the time before Napoleon except for the sad story of the four soldiers who were trying to follow their orders to stop the German army in May 1940. They blew up a bridge and had to give up because they ran out of ammunition.

Newly renovated, just this building is worth a visit. Content also interesting and very clearly mapped and shown. You need about 30 to 40 minutes to get a good overview of the history of Coevorden.
