It isn't so much about what is there but more so about the people who run the establishment. They are truly inspirational about, and committed to, sustainable farming and land management, conservation and being in harmony with nature. It was a great joy and pleasure to spend a couple of hours with Paolo and Myra and to be enlightened and educated about what is possible if only we open our eyes and put our minds to doing it harmoniously. George Lawrence, Bowral, NSW, Australia.

This was a perfect outing for us and our kid. Lots of fruits to taste and lots of fun. The owners were great and the explanations were given to us in English. Also their products are worth a taste. Mmmm

"I Giardini di Pomona" offers accommodation in three comfortable and well-furnished "Trulli"(a typical local residence) surrounded by green hills and fig trees. We spent there about one week in August 2017. Paolo, who is the owner and responsible of the "Conservatorio Botanico", is a very kind and willing person who organizes daily tours in the fields and will bring you in the deep secrets of local farming. Breakfast with milk, homemade biscuits and yogurt are usually provided, and the guests may take advantage of the unique location and taste some local products. Pay specific attention to your reservation and check it before leaving. Despite a confirmation mail and a deposit of 30% of the total amount by bank account, we saw our reservation canceled firstly and then modified twice (the second time less than 24 hours before check-in). If you are booking outside the usual website, define the price in advance.

Today, I had the immense pleasure to visit 'Il conservatorio botanico : I giardini di Pomona', in the Puglie region, southern Italy. This botanical garden hosts more than 1000 fruit plants, among which more than 300 fig varieties. I had the privilege to visit the property with Dr Paolo Belloni who created this wonderful heavenly place. Together we harvested main crop figs of many, many cultivars, discussed for more than an hour about figs and reasons for growing them, with our distinct requirements. If you happen to go to vacation in that area, you may also reside inside the botanical garden in rooms with lovely names : Dottato, Panachée, etc. Dr Belloni is extremely kind and really savy! I decided to buy one of his book (about figs in Puglia), took a few pictures and went back to where I temporarily stay. In truth, I have not taken fig pictures as I was too busy talking, harvesting and eating.. but I took pictures of the main entrance before leaving.

Tucked away in the countryside outside Cisternino, the gardens of Pomona are not easy to find although there are signs leading you from the main road. The other thing to bear in mind is that Paulo, the man whose vision it was to establish this very special place, does not speak a lot of english. That is, for this trip, pretty crucial if, like me, you don't speak italian. Paulo was a Milan based fashion photographer but decided to develop this homage to the fig tree. He has grown some 350 different types of fig on this land and that number is getting larger year by year. The sex life of a fig is something I hadn't considered before coming here! Paulo also offers a really interesting tour of his land with the accent on foraging. I also loved his introduction to some of the wild orchids that grow in this region. This is a trip for the gardening enthusiast. It is also one for people with an interest in living off the land.
