About
The Colony Tour is Achill's Number 1 Walking Tour. The Tour is a gentle two hour walk around the historic ruins of the 19th Century Protestant Achill Mission with BAFTA-winning writer and Achill islander Kevin Toolis. Learn about the fascinating rise and fall of the Irish Prophet Edward Nangle who in the Year of Our Lord 1831 came to Achill to save the heathen native Irish from the errors of Popery - and ignite a bitter religious war for the entire destiny of the Irish nation with his arch rival His Grace Archbishop of Tuam Dr John MacHale. A war fought out in Bibles, guns, boycotts, famine and starvation as the devastating Great Famine of 1847 raged and hundreds of desperate islanders took the soup to survive. Tours run Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Fantastic insight into life in The Colony on Achill . Kevin Toolis has the ability to paint wonderful verbal pictures of all aspects of life on the island at that time and explains political and religeous aspects without bias. A really wonderful tour which I would recommend to all.

Kevin is a master story teller. We lived the history of the people of Achill as he weaved the story of how the Rev Nangle tried to convert the people of Achill. The ensueing rivalry with the Archbishop is unforgettable. Do not miss this tour if you like history and a good story!

Thank you for the great review. The creation of the Colony in Achill in the 19th century truly is an epic story of soup, souls, division, soaring ambition and startling ruins, kevin

Fascinating, detailed, and entertaining couple of hours in the company of Edward Nangle. Challenges the traditional view of Nangle with a balanced presentation.

Loved the tour. Kevin's vibrant storytelling breathed life into Achill Island's enthralling history. Amidst breathtaking views, he expertly guided us through the colony's site, providing a vivid snapshot of Nangle's fascinating era. Hearing Kevin's account of this somber period in Achill's history was incredibly intriguing. Highly recommend this tour.

The tour was fascinating as the tour guide is hugely knowledgeable and enthusiastic and The Colony is unique. The pace of the walk is just right. The 2 hours flew by and all of the tour guests (except v young children) were v engaged. Thanks so much!

Kevin’s narrative breathes life to the story of Dugort’s Protestant colony. His descriptions and quotes, his local knowledge and understanding and his personal connection to the area all helped to make this a truly unique tour. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about this almost lost piece of history in an entertaining and engaging way.

My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed the Colony tour. Kevin brought this part of Achill’s controversial history to life in an engaging and enthusiastic way. We had a true insight into the lives of the people involved. We also had a great reminder of how life was for the Irish during and after the famine years. Such a beautiful morning with sun shining over Dugort beach spent with a proud Achill native. Now reading one of Kevin’s books and really enjoying it. Sinéad and Siobhan

Amazing tour and Kevin was a real wealth of information and knowledge. Informative, engaging and really interesting. So well worth the few hours to gain an insight into part of the history of Achill that is just so unknown. Kevin is an excellent tour guide and lit up the walk around the main parts of the tour. A real treasure to do if you are visiting Achill island!

So I came along to this walking tour with absolutely no info on the subject matter or the tour guide or anything - I was on Achill with my family - retired parents and my 38 year old sister by the way - and they had booked the tour and I just coasted along as a late arrival to the holiday.

Kevin Toorlis is a fantastic speaker, an organised, professional presenter and an engaging historian passionate about his subject matter. The Colony Tour brought in some very interesting history of our troubled island (Ireland) and on its wee island of Achill as well. I had never heard of Edward Nangle or his mission to “save Catholics” or his colony. My friend who is actually FROM ACHILL ISLAND didn’t know this one either!! It sounds dry as sh1t3 but Kevin really animated the story and brought it to life walking (not too far but still a decent stretch of the legs) around the key sites in the area where Nangle established his colony of church and education, printing and perverting, preaching and persuading natives to rethink their purpose and creed, loyalty and love.
A very informative and engaging morning in a fantastic location - fair play
