About The Colony Tour
The Colony Tour is a two hour walking tour around the historic ruins of the Achill Mission with BAFTA-winning writer and Achill islander Kevin Toolis. Learn about the fascinating rise and fall of the Irish Prophet Edward Nangle who in the Year of Our Lord 1831 came to Achill to save the heathen native Irish from the errors of Popery - and ignite a bitter religious war for the entire destiny of the Irish nation with his arch rival His Grace Archbishop of Tuam Dr John MacHale.

This is a excellent tour. The local history is well researched and set in the context of the political events in Ireland at the time. I would highly recommend.

An entertaining walk in time and space, I’ve been coming to Achill for over sixty years and I’ve never learned so much about the island’s history before. Over two hours of dramatic storytelling and a healthy walk seemed to pass in minutes. Check the forecast and bring rain gear if needed. For a newcomer it’s a great introduction to Achill and the revelations are especially interesting for anyone with Achill roots or connections.

Part historical walk, part one-man show, this tour is a must-do activity for anyone with an interest in Achill and its history. Kevin is a compelling storyteller and this tour brings life a fascinating tale of a battle of wills between two larger-than-life personalities. I would recommend this tour without hesitation. In fact I'm looking forward to going again with my brothers next time they visit Achill.

I joined one of Kevin’s tours a couple of weeks ago, and have since recommended it to friends who have visited me in Mayo. This is a fascinating, informative and thought provoking experience - I can not praise it highly enough. A walk around beautiful Dugort, a fascinating insight into turbulent times in Mayo and throughout Ireland, but also so many parallels with current events around the world when cultures and belief systems are in conflict. Don’t miss this if you are visiting Achill - it’s a special experience.

My wife signed me up on this historical tour of Dugort, a small village on Achill island, where I’ve been coming for the past twenty odd years. I imagined myself pretty well-versed in its history and geography, having spent many wet afternoons walking it’s few streets and so my expectations weren’t sky-high to be honest. But I was quite wrong. Kevin Toolis invokes some of ardent fervour of Edward Nangle himself in this account of the mans crazy scheme to evangelise the natives and the two hours feels like not nearly enough. He has an actor’s voice and a shamanic intensity -almost terrifying at times- that stirringly suits the subject matter. His ancestry on the island and a personal back story almost as interesting as Nangel and McHale’s also play their parts in a most enjoyable afternoon, which signed off with a couple of verses of really evocative bardic poetry. Well worth your €20 folks.

Thank you for such a thoughtful review. And the kind words. The Colony on Achill is like the remains of a religious Gettysburg - a battleground for the destiny of the Irish nation. A real historic treasure that should be cherished. Hope to see you again on another Tour in the future. Thanks Kevin
