I definitely recommend a brief excursion to the area to check out the ruins. There are dozens (or more?) partial houses made from stone nestled into the hillsides. A fascinating glimpse into history. Sheep graze amongst them and if you turn around, you have a...More

If you like ruins, this place is paradise. The entire ruins of a 19th century settlement in Archill Village for you to walk around. It’s mesmerising to look at all the abandoned houses and try to picture them alive. We visited the place in mid...More

This free historical site is easy to find but does require a bit of a hike about. We were glad we had hiking boots. We tried to imagine living in these huts and gained an appreciation for an earlier time. We parked right by the...More

Do not leave Achill without visiting The Deserted Village, historical & so interesting. Include your visit as part of a loop walk along the quarry road.

Was here last week and thought it was incredible. It has a terribly sad history and extremely fascinating. I sat for 30 minutes there to contemplate and try to visualise what life was like there. Unfortunately it suffered a cruel fate due to occupation and...More

Just an amazing experience. Reading through the history and then walking through the villages, you get a great sense of the tragedy that unfolded here. It has such wonderful potential and needs some state funding to really draw tourists in. It is a must see...More

Hello Debra, when you stay at keel, it is well signposted. It´s easy to get there. Depending on the weather, bring wellies with you. Might get a bit muddy when it´s raining. Parking place (free) at the cemetery.
