WOW!! A special part of this World

I just love this area of Tuscany with its wild rocky outcrops softened by the undulating plowed ground, I have never seen it in Summer but spent several Autumns & a winter. This is a man made panorama.

Breathtaking scenery

The drive across from San Giovanni D’Asso to Asciano and then back to Buonconvento is fabulous. The road is very twisty and offers exciting driving but the views either side are some if the best in Tuscany. Worth a drive if you have been to Abbazia Monte Oliveto or heading to Montalcino.

Beautiful drive
May 2019 • Couples
We drove this area after reading a Rick Steves guidebook where he highly recommends a loop drive south of Sienna. It is absolutely beautiful countryside with very little to mar the views that go on for miles. No photo can really do it justice. We went in May when everything was green, so I didn't think there was anything that I would call a lunar landscape. We stopped for lunch in Asciano and visited the monestary. We probably spent 5-6 hours for the entire trip and it was well worth it. I don't, however, think this is something you should worry about doing on your first, or even your third, trip to Italy as there are so many other places to visit that have so much more to offer. We were staying in the Tuscan countryside for the first of our two-week visit and had no specific itinerary, so this was a perfect use of some of our time.

Thanks for reading. I’ll appreciate a thumbs up below if you’ve found this helpful.

To help you decide if following me is worth the trouble, here’s what I have planned for 2019: finishing my reviews of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro; continue reviewing restaurants in the KC metro; reviewing the Northern Lights cruise to Norway in January; starting my reviews of Tuscany for a week, followed by several days in each of Bellagio and Milan in May; traveling to Australia in September, with a possible trip extension to Bali, Borneo, Brunei and Singapore; and going to Maui for a week in late November.

Beautiful rolling landscape
May 2019 • Couples
What a wonderful drive we had through the Crete Senesi, especially between Asciano and San Giovanni d'Asso. The landscape was so green and was punctuated with swaths of wheat, fields of yellow rapeseed (used to make canola oil), and poppies. Here and there the clay soil peeked through the green, providing an interesting contrast. If you're in this area, seek the road less traveled and explore this beautiful landscape.

What a changing landscape!

Driving through this area was delightful. It's known for its rolling hills and sometimes lunar landscape! The changing shadows on the land as the sun moves across the sky is something to see!

A wonderful drive through this beautiful area
Jun 2018 • Couples
The star of any visit in this area besides excellent food and wine is the scenery. The Crete Senesi warrants a well planned long leisurely drive to take in the sights and be able to avoid traffic, you will not regret it, and with many choices of where to stop for lunch or refreshments

A dream landscape
May 2018 • Couples
More than 20 years I have searched for a perfect spot to buy at a reasonable price. That does not exist but I found the nearest best thing with allot of land in Montisi.

A less traveled path through Tuscany with beautiful vistas
May 2018 • Family
If you want a beautiful drive through Tuscany, this is it. It offers "big sky" vistas of a range of sparsely settled hills and woods that you will miss on the more heavily traveled autostrada. Along with the sweeping landscape it includes the beautiful monastery of Monte Oliveto Maggiore.

Great Drive and Great Scenery
Oct 2017 • Couples
We took this drive, south of Siena, in late October. It was very scenic, with lots of opportunities to pull over for photos. You will see some very Tuscan scenes on this drive. This area is much different than other areas of Tuscan, such as Chianti, as it is not as green and lush. It kind of looks like a lunar landscape. However, the green of the cypress trees lining the villa entranceways is a great contrast to the rich clay fields. We visited a number of very quaint villages and it really was not all that busy with tourists. The drive took us about 3.5 hours to complete and brought us back to Siena. If you stopped at all the villages and sites it could take a full day to complete this drive. Driving the countryside in Tuscan is really what it is all about. Well that and the food. Don’t miss this beautiful drive.
