- nac54Drogheda, Ireland8 contributionsExcellent tour and a wonderful monumentWe visited on Sunday 16th April. A magnificent Castle preserved without any extra enhancement. Lovely surroundings with pleasant walks around the castle and along the river Boyne. Access to the grounds is free and there is a €5 charge for a guided tour of the interior of the castle which lasts about 45 minutes. We took the option of a guided tour which was very informative and I would thoroughly recommend that. Our guide, Margaret, was very knowledgeable and could really paint a word picture of life in and around the Castle. All ideas of romantic Anglo Norman knights, beautiful maidens and happy bucolic peasants were quickly disposed of . She included everyone in the group, children and adults. Inside the castle would be very challenging for anyone with limited mobility because there are a lot of winding staircases, made as Margaret explained, to restrict access to the interior. There are plenty of notice boards in the castle grounds which give great information on the castle complex and surrounding buildings. Well worth a visit but give yourself plenty of time particularly if you have an interest in history.Visited April 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2023
- Bozeman-DublinTrim, Ireland8,826 contributionsStill Fantastic Even With Tge Keep ClosedTrim Castle is magnificent and though I'm not going to lie and say the visit to the Keep is the not highlight, something I've done many, many times, the grounds are still well worth a visit and are a delight onto themselves. Fair play to the OPW, it us beautifully maintained and they have a one way system in these times of Covid wherby you tour the site on your own. Plenty of signage makes sure you learn plenty as well as take in the lovely scenery. It's free for the rest of 2020 though even in 'normal' times the entrance fee is very, very nominal. Plenty of staff on site to answer questions and add to your visit.Visited September 2020Travelled soloWritten 28 September 2020
- Gene R JSilver Spring, Maryland9,010 contributionsExcellent ruins in a small active village. This was our last stop of 5 on a 130 km tour north of Dublin, finding a parking spot (1 euro/hr) next to the entrance. The tall keep dominates the 7 acre interior enclosed by curtain wall ruins. To the side, a Great Hall ruins has views across the Boyne River to the tall spire left of the 1368 Augustian St. Mary's Abbey. Excellent ruins in a small active village.Visited May 2022Written 31 May 2022

On tour we recently visited Trim Castle.
A rainy day did not stop us from enjoying the ole ruins and the grounds.
The guide we had did a great job telling us all about the castle and its history.
Built about 1172 it was the largest Norman Castle in Ireland.
It is now owned and maintained by the Irish Government.
You can go up a narrow circular stone tower to the top .
Be carefull , not good if you have a walking issue .
Great to see

This is a must go place if you’re visiting Ireland. The tour was so amazing, and the tour guide was very nice and knew exactly what she was talking about. She was able to answer any questions anyone had, which made me feel very trusting with everything about their program. I am actually a descendant of the builder of the castle but this is an unbiased review. My father visited the castle in 1993 right before the filming of braveheart there, and he said the castle just used to be a bunch of ruins. Now it has plaques of information, it has many things built in it to make it look like how it looked, and it’s now an amazing thing to visit. 10/10 recommend the castle and the tour if you love history.

This is a fantastic example of the Norman history of Meath & Ireland. The castle, though a ruin, is very impressive, with great views. I would recommend to friends. The tour guide gave a great tour.

You can find castles in almost every town. They range from “fallen down ruins” to full 19th Century “estates”. I have visited over a dozen and Trim is my favorite. Trim is a well maintained 12th Century castle. The tour of the Keep was excellent. It lasts about an hour, finalizing on the open 5th floor for a view of surrounding areas. The signs around the outside explained other aspects. Well done OPW.

Excellent castle to visit, well maintained and helpful staff. Good signage around the site too. Parking was easy and you can’t miss the castle as it’s right on the main road

I am not a big castle tour type of person but this was a very interesting tour. The young lady who was our guide was wonderful. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about her job and sharing her knowledge and answering any question you may have. The tour is about an hour plus you can walk around the grounds as well. If you are in the area I would highly recommend it. It is cool in the castle and there are a number of narrow winding stairs. You have been warned.

We spent 3 nights in Trim as we concluded our trip to Ireland and wanted to be close to Dublin for our departure. This castle was not a consideration when we selected Trim but, it should have been. We, a family of 4 with 2 adults, 1 teen, and 7 year old (Liam, the keeper of the key) really enjoyed the tour. Our tour guide (maybe Brenda?) knew a lot and had a clever sense of humor. The keep and looking out over the town from above were all a treat. The Irish weather kicked in and a short shower really added to the mood. Want to feel like a giant? You will on the tight spiral stairs inside. It's fun, informative, and cheap. Just do it!

The tour of the Trim Castle Keep with Brenda was one of the highlights of our trip to Ireland. She was very knowledgeable and entertaining. She explained the details of why the castle was built they way it was and how it was used. She explained how people lived at that time and why things you saw were relevant. She provided the details and background that made the tour special.....that education made all the difference (and she was funny)! Well worth your time. Best Castle we visited in Ireland!

Is that the same as the Heritage Pass? Can you just walk around the outside castle and take pictures. It sadly won't be open when we will be driving by.
Thanks.

The OPW Heritage Card gets you in free. You can do a guided tour or have a look around the grounds yourself without going into the castle

Like others have said it is about an hour drive from Dublin airport, that is if you have experience driving on the wrong side of the road, add about another 30 minutes for safety. Also get yourself a sim specifically for Europe before you go so you can use Google maps for navigating.

There is a Gaeltacht area not far from there close to Athboy. Ráth Chairn was founded in 1935 when families moved to area from Connemara, it’s grown a lot since then! Enjoy your visit. Slainte!

Bonjour,

Bon voyage!

I don't see any way to order tickets online. Can you usually get on a tour with no problem as a walk in. We will be at the castle on June 7th.

Hi Pat, please see response I received:
Hello Martina,
There are two options of visit here at Trim Castle. The castle grounds are self guided. Access to the Keep (the central tower) is by guided tour only. Tours of the Keep are scheduled on a daily basis and run frequently within our opening hours approximately ever 30/45 minutes. Large groups of 15 people or more must pre-book a time slot and these are limited each day. Tickets for individuals or groups fewer than 15 can not be booked in advance. They are available every day from the ticket desk at the castle and are issued on a first come first served basis, Places are limited per tour so it is advisable to arrive as early in the day as possible as tours can fill up and delays can occur.
I hope this information helps.
Regards
Karlos Brady OPW
