I have traveled this country far and wide over the many years I have lived here, have driven past this place many a time, but never stopped and had a look around, I didn't go in, but had a 7km walk around the local park area, this is highly recommended too, and basically got a good eyeful of said castle,... If you've seen Braveheart then you've seen Trim Castle. It's only about a 40 minute drive northwest of Dublin. Many interesting bits of history. Just make sure you check to confirm that both the grounds AND the castle are open -- sometimes the grounds are open but the castle isn't. So rent a car and go see it.

This is an 12 century structure and if you are part of a guided tour all is explained. The engineering is amazing, the defence intelligence and social order is fantastic. Using the gases from the septic tank to kill lice on clothes tells it all. Brave Heart was filmed here.

A must see site when in the area. Easy access and plenty of parking. No being a fan of such sites, my assessment would be of little value

Braveheart was filmed here. Gorgeous Castle with loads of history. Our tour guide explained it's history reall well, very interesting tour. Most importantly very funny. Walking up the spiral stairs made me feel like hodor as I'm 6,3" ...these ancient Irish folk must have been meedgeets. A great cafe around the corner for lunch.

Can't praise the tour guide enough. Fantastic grasp of history and the castles place in that history spanning nearly 1,000 years. Very well worth the visit. Only €4 per adult. Beautiful clear day. Brisk when you get to the top of the castle as it was a cutting winter wind. Fantastic views for miles around. I've been around this castle... More

Trim Castle is located on public grounds where you can walk your dogs and take a casual stroll around the outside of the main wall and around some other distance pieces of the original castle. It was great to be able to just walk through the grounds of this park and appreciate the buildings before taking a tour inside of... More

It is nicely situated on the river banks. It needs restoration and lots of work needs to be done. It looks great in the night specially from the other side of the Boyne river
