Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

You can see garbage everywhere. I think it's quite normal thing in a corrupted country like Sri Lanka.(Factors to be expected). Just ignore that and try to enjoy the remaining natural beauty.
(Beach near to forest - interesting)
As a Local I think it's good to bring your food and essentials from outside the beach because the prices are high than usual.

I was a bit disappointed, the way down between the rocks looks pretty but needs to be careful, a lot of garbage on the way and on the beach, view is pretty basic…. Only monkeys are cool :)

A hidden gem off the coast of Sri Lanka, this bay is perfect for a dip in the ocean as there are no waves! You need to go as far as possible by vehicle down the unawatuna stretch and find parking (usually at a guest house for a nominal fee) and then it’s a short trek (approx 15 - 20 mins) from there. (We had a group of 8 kids aged 7-12). Pack a towel, change of clothes, sun block & a picnic. No changing rooms so use a sarong / towel as a make shift cover :) There are a few stalls selling juice, snacks and water (sign posted in English and Russian!) en route but I’m not sure of prices. The achcharu at the stall down at the bay (at jungle beach) was reasonably priced.
It is a famous spot so expect a crowd but also just ignore and make it your own. Some other reviewers complain about “too many locals” - this is our island and we welcome all, equally. Please don’t expect us to refrain from enjoying our own island! There were also comments that it was dirty - we didn’t witness any trash on the beach. It was a little crowded but not to the extent that we couldn’t find a spot. There were some people cooking a meal on a rock close by but it didn’t seem to bother the crowd and we didn’t see any litter. Soak in the sun and sea (while getting ready for the trek back to the vehicle - the only downside!)

Nice beach for a sea bath. You need to park the vehicle and move little bit . But it is worth the travel. It is getting crowded during the evening

Yet another of srilanka's filthy beaches. Take pictures but try not to look what you might be standing on
This beach is popular with locals and they seem to bring a load of rubbish with them which is left on the beach and never cleaned up
We visited srilanka after 10 years and the rubbish and filth everywhere is shocking. Not to mention the army of stray dogs and cats everywhere.
Our view is srilanka is rapidly becoming paradise lost
Is it do difficult to educate children and adults to not litter and to keep their heritage clean.
Apart from that you get some good photos because the jungle touches the beach at this point.

We went to Unawatuna for three days just to end our holidays on the beach. This was beginning of August. Everyone said that it was better not to go because of the raining seasin but we saw really a little bit of rain. Unawatuna is a niice place close to Galle where we went around the fort. We went around with bikes and made nice jungle walks to the beach where we visited some hidden temples. Beautiful! There is very cosy street where are some nice restaurants and little shops. We realy liked to stay there even when it was not the season to be there for surfing or diving.

This Hidden lovely beach is few kilomitrs away from Unawatuna Beach. Its Located near to small forest and you have to walk to this hidden Beach. Its less Crowded and so senic. Sunset is amazing. There is parking facilities and better to come back from forest after 6.30 PM.

Ciao!

Hi
I was recommended the beaches at Unawatuna but my daughter cannot walk up/down hill. Can anyone tell me of a flat access area to shallow, swimmable sea? Also, we are going In January 2017; is the water warm?
Any other tips for Sri Lanka for a first time family would be welcome.
Thanks

I would say hikkaduwa beach would be easier to access for someone not able to mobilise easily. There was a steep gradient at unawatuna. The water was warm in december.at hikkaduwa there was shallow flat beach near neelas place and international beach hotel.

Hi !
Is there a road leading to this from Unawatuna Bay? In Google it shows there is likely a dirt trail leading to this from where the road ends from Unwatuna Bay side, to the west of Japanese Pagoda connecting to the dirt trail in front of the pagoda. Is it?

Pretty much as Google says, I think. We went via Tuk from the road to Galle which climbs over the hill and drops down towards the beach.
I was told that you can go round the corner via the pagoda, but it takes quite a while.
