Fascinating! A ferry that never touches water! It is suspended by cables hanging from the bridge above. Very unusual. The ferry is small, but wide enough to take a few cars the quick trip across the Nord-Ostsee canal single-file. The canal is a major one, with heavy traffic -- literally -- including very large vessels. We heard that in 2015... More

The bridge was damaged more than a year ago and there does not seem to be any effort to repair it. It is no longer functioning.

Really nice experience to travel with this unique vehicle. The bridge is also nice to admire being the landmark of the city of Rendsburg. Nearby is a restaurant where you can have something to drink or to eat while you admire the ships crossing the channel.

Well, first thing is that the Transporter Bridge was closed, which it apparently is every summer. The museum is basically just a room, so that was poor. But it is the only Transporter Bridge out of 8 remaining in the world that is still in operation (when not closed ;-)). Nice on a sunny day!

It´s a nice little ferry crossing, the kids find it exciting, and there is a nice part of the German countryside on each side of the river bank after disembarking (Can one call it that on a ferry who is not in the water, but hanging in wires? :-)) The best of it all, it´s free of charge, just get... Strange feeling - crossing the river with our car in a ferry that does not touch the water! And then it is even for free!

This is a unique way to cross the Nord-Ostsee Kanal. Under one of the highest bridges in Europe is a transporter ferry which takes four cars and as many cyclists and pedestrians as will fit on it every 15 minutes from 5am to 10pm. As it replaces a local road that existed before the High Bridge was built for the... More

The Schwebefaehre is a unique way of crossing the canal. Until I visited Rendsburg first in 1989, I had never heard of such a thing as this. A ferry suspended on cables carrying passengers and vehicles across the canal. It just celebrated it's 100th year of operation and is worth a trip to see this marvel

When I arrived to Rendsberg from Hamburg via train, I was on this bridge. I will say reasonably high to give a nice city view. Later I realized that it has this special facility and is transporter bridge letting people and vehicle cross the canal. Which you will see deep and quite occassionally a container ship will pass. Nice view... More

If you happen to be in Rendsburg, this is something to do. We were lucky and did not have to wait long to cross on the bridge. It allows just four cars at a time.
