Can’t miss this in Landsberg.

Impressive tower and gateway to the old city section of Landsberg. It leads to the main square Hauptplatz where there are lots of eateries and benches to take in the historic views and buildings. Really good vibe in the main square. I read up on this the shmaltz - fat was the name given due to the bacon trade in this area years ago.

One of the gates to the old town

The most beautiful gate in the town. Try to go when the sun is facing it - makes it even more glorious!

Worth a photo

If you are in Landsberg you can not fail to see this tower as it is in the centre of the town surrounded by beautiful buildings. It was not open when we visited so we could only enjoy it from the outside but it is worth seeing

Medival tower in the center of the city
Jan 2017 • Family
The "Schmalzturn" (lard tower) or as it is originally called the "Schöne Turem" (beautiful tower) I the northern tower of the first city wall of Landsberg from the 14th century. The name comes from the market days in the city. The farmers selling lard normally were under the tower in the shade to prevent the lard from melting.

East town gateway
Sep 2016 • Solo
This 'Schoner Turm' is the east town gateway of the oldest town wall. It was rebuilt in the 15th century. You cannot miss it if you stand with your back to the Marien fountain in the town centre.

Middle Age tower
Jul 2015 • Couples
This very nice tower was built in the old town wall. It is told, that there was flat inside the tower, where today is a small museum. It crowns the Main Square of the city.

A lot of History
Jul 2013 • Solo
There continues to be a cannon ball from a war somewhere around the 1700's embedded in the wall of the tower and there is a small museum inside the tower. The enter town square (Hauptplatz) is interesting with cobbled streets and a cobbled community gathering place surrounding a huge water fountain. I visited a number of times in the past ten years, but I also grew up in that little town and am very familiar with the tower and the town. It is a MUST on anyone's travel agenda who enjoys seeing the old restored to work with the surrounding new structures. The entire old town has a wall surrounding it.

Nices Tower of all

The real name ist "Beautiful Tower" (Schöner Turm) It houses the ancient rooms for the Towerman and the Town Mayor.
Unfortunately Jakob the Towerman is no longer in Town. He has moved to the North Sea to "Wilhelmshaven" there you can find him working as "Sir Fritz" the Captain of the "Klabautermobil"
