Exciting contemporary building with exhibits tracing history of glassmaking
Jul 2019 • Couples
Set in a park in the attractive town of Frauenau this museum is full of interesting and attractive examples of the glassmakers art.

The layout of the museum is in the form of a spiral taking you through time from the discovery of glass to the present day. In each section there is signage in English and Czech as well as German explaining the development of techniques in glassmaking, but the rest of the signage is (quite reasonably) in German.

At the centre of the museum is (a non functioning) model of a glassworks telling the stories of the people who worked there.

We have visited other glass museums with larger and more impressive collections, but the open layout and the architecture made this museum stand out.

The park surrounding the museum contains glass sculptures and the museum itself has a pleasant cafe.

An excellent collection.

From the warm greeting till the end of the visit we were very pleased with the museum. It has been about 10 years since we had been here. Currently there is an exhibit of 17th-18th century glass belonging to the Joos family and is on loan for a little while longer. There was not one piece that I would not have gladly taken if offered to me. The museum has glass that is from Roman times right up to glass that is being made right now by artisans. The museum is laid out chronologically and most exhibits have only German descriptions, it is easy to figure out who made, where it was made and when it was made. I wish I could come to Frauenau more often and just enjoy the glass.

Fun stop on the glass route

Worth the stop if you’re driving the glass route. Exhibits show the history of glass making, and there are some cool old pieces. Everything is in German (which I don’t speak), but I still enjoyed it.

Typically excellent German specialty museum

Even if you are not interested in glass but do have some interest in history, this museum is worth a few hours. It is beautifully organized and puts glass making in the context of the economy and society in general. And there is a surprising US connection. We highly recommend it.

Nice museum

The glass sculpture garden is a pleasant stroll linking the museum with one or two of the glass-makers in the village (Poschinger and Eisch). The museum itself has a huge variety of glass, explains the history of glass making in the region as well as it's manufacture and processes. There is also an opportunity to watch some glassblowing and have a go yourselves.

Interesting to see the history of glass, from beginning to hand blown to mass production. Some beautiful creations in glass to view.

A great outing
Aug 2015 • Friends
The outside area round the museum is in fact a lovely park with a lake and many interesting glass exhibits which sparkle in the daylight and are well reflected in the lake water. There is also an adventure climbing park both for adults and children and a picnic area. There is no fee for the park. The glass museum (a small entry fee) inside is not very large, but arranged into circular walks on two levels through which visitors can meander to learn about the glass making in the region, its history but also to see many examples of glassware and glass art. There is also a café with a pleasant outside sitting area. There is plenty of free parking available on site.

Worth a visit, but on a Sunday
Aug 2014 • Couples
The Museum is nice and a great small town. We visited on Sunday and it was about the only think in the town open. Very little of interest open. The Museum is rather small but doe a nice job with that they have. Would like to have seen more high level art glass as the region is dominated by factor glass.
