I've been to many castles and this one just didn't rock my boat. There just didn't seem to be alot there and no real good photo opportunity. Free with english heritage but I would not visit again. I do really like Helmsley and the nearby Rievaulx abbey, this review does not reflect on the area.

We had to cut our visit short unfortunately but it was really interesting and you get head sets which tells you all the history of the castle and Helmsley. I would like to go back and take more time there.

This little gem is highly accessible, and easy to tour. The ruins are beautiful, and the "new" part has very interesting displays, describing what life was life here through the centuries.

The castle is bigger and better than you might think by just seeing the tower from the town. A good Visitors' Centre, fantastic audio. Great for kids and adults with imagination. Limited for wheelchairs. Don't miss the Tudor room with date over the fireplace. If you can go to visit the gardens too, that would enhance your experience. Probably Spring... More

Castle #3 on our self-drive itinerary visiting North Yorkshire with a 16-day English Heritage Overseas Visitors Pass. As fans of the English Civil War we had to check out this castle, which was a Royalist castle that endured a 3-month siege before its keep was blown up by Cromwell's troops led by Sir Thomas Fairfax (who incidentally liked it so... We took our two children (8 & 10) around Helmsley Castle & they really enjoyed exploring both inside & outside the ruins. Plenty of things to see & lots of information inside the renovated part of the Castle. Kids especially enjoyed exploring around the dry moats. Very peaceful Castle grounds with plenty of chirruping birds to keep you company. And,... More

Looking at the castle you wouldn't think it was as old as it is, interesting place, with a lot of history!
