About
On 15th January 2009 a fin whale beached on the strand in Burren, Kilbrittain Co Cork, Ireland. It was an enormous animal. The skeleton was put on display in a permanent position in the local village and is an amazing sight. There is a video with sound of the story of the whale. Free amenity. There is a picnic area with tables and a beautiful woodland walk with a historic castle in the background.

Started at the whale & walked through the playground, down the hill. There was a fairy trail along this way. Then we crossed the road and over the foot bridge where we turned left!! This was d mistake we made. I had an out&about buggy and this way was not suitable for a buggy. My husband and I carried the buggy to the top of the hill and after that it was a beautiful walk! I had a 1 year old & 3 year old with me. Bear in mind that once we crossed the road, this was also the end of the fairy trail. In total I'd say 6/7 fairy houses on the first stretch of walk. What we realised was that if we had turned right after going over the foot bridge it would have been perfect for the buggy. Yes, we would've had to come back the same way but it was so beautiful it wouldn't matter. We will know this for future reference. I would recommend for young families but would love to see a continuation of the fairy trail across the road. The play ground at the start/end is fabulous also. Would give 5 stars apart from us turning left and getting a full body workout as opposed to a stroll ;-)

Absolutely delightful little village with colourful buildings and several bars set in a peaceful valley. At the end of the village set up high in a delightfully incongruous purpose built shelter is the skeleton of a huge whale washed up on a beach nearby a few years ago. I'm told there was some competition between Killbrittain and another village for the honour of displaying the whale. It is a testament to Ireland that an unprotected skeleton such as this as well as the audio visual equipment providing a useful presentation is left completely intact. I'm afraid in England where I live, pieces of bone and certainly the TV would long since have been stolen or smashed up. A lovely car park and woodland pathway lie just beyond.

We visited the whale recently and it's impressive to see but the real attraction was the playground for the kids. There is a car-park up behind the whale and the playground is next to it. The first park is for younger kids and has the soft surface underfoot. As you move down the hill the apparatuses are for older kids including teenagers. They have a zip line and outdoor gym stuff. A great place for the kids.

This was the third time I have inserted the €2 and listened to the tale of the whale it always causes me to have a little chuckle to myself.
I wouldn't say it's worth travelling miles to see but if your nearby it's worth a listen to & there is a beautiful little walk from it down to the weir.
If you do take the time to visit then make time to visit the villages two little bars and ask the locals their tales of the whale.. you may find a few folks who are very passionate about it ;)

We had seen this poor whale after it died in 2009. Never knew the bones were on show. Found by accident today and my sons especially the sea life mad one were fascinated. Good parking lot just above...picnic area and a great playground.

We came across this place by accident when travelling through co. Cork.
An unexpected discovery that led to another discovery of a picturesque walk way nearby.

This was really cool to see how big the whale was compared to a human. There was a diagram displaying sizes of different whales with humans. There could have been more focus on it in the town as it is situated on the outskirts. Overall a good experience and very educational. Kids will love it!

We almost missed this interesting whale skeleton mounted in a public space in Kilbrittain. As it was the subject of a TV programme which we had watched we knew of its location and went looking for it. Very interesting and something to impress the grandkids!

It is interesting to see, but nothing too extra about it. There’s a playground about 2 mins walk away which can be fun when going with kids.
