This is not a family walk. Pretty hard.

Nice lake but do not underestimate the climb. They could have made the path a lot more accessible by making some stairs in the stones. Honestly, they take 6 euro for the parking but for such a busy walk the state of the path is a bloody shame, even dangerous. From the parking to Melo and then to Capitello is a continuous scramble. On the first stretch to Melo you can avoid the worst part by keeping to the left 5 min after a snack bar. No avoiding the bad parts on the second stretch to Capitello. After climbing to Capitello you can continue up to the GR20, also a pretty hard climb but doable, follow the GR20 for half an hour (pretty nice stretch) and then a much easier path goes down to lake Melo. Ads an hour to the walk but you avoid crossing the struggling crowds up the main path and much less stressfull.

Even harder but as you are there 60% already

We kept climbing as we were at Melo already. The way is shorter but wilder and you are a bit more tired as well. Take off your shoes, this cold bath for your feet will help you for going down. Take your lunch with you and enjoy the view somewhere around the way. Make sure to take back all your plastic and paper. It is a natural park and it was nicely clean.

Nice lake, but ...

It is a heavy climb fro Lake Melo, suitable only for fit people. Great colours and views both of Capitello and of Melo. Be aware of cooler temperature and quickly changing weather.

Spectacular but for seasoned walkers
Aug 2016
The Lac du Capitello is a decent walk from the car park at the top of the gorge (pay a small fee). The trail is rocky and rough most of the way and there are a couple of short sections of scrambling using cables for assistance.

I have seen the walk described as suitable for children, but I wouldn't advise it due to the scramble sections.

Take lots of water and sunscreen as the Corsican sun can be punishing as there is little to no shade.

A tough hike but a 'must see'
Aug 2016 • Family
Climbed to Lac Melo and then on to Lake Capitello today (au 5th 2016). Weather started tenperamentally with rain but cleared in the end to to glorious sunshine. Climbed to Lac du Melo (about an hour from the highest car park £6 per car at time of writing) and then a further 45 mins to Lake Capitello.

The water at Lake Capitello is crystal clear and i also braved it and swam in the Lake - the periphery of the Lake is about 10 metres deep, the centre about 40 metres deep but its a big Lac. There is an easy sandy entrance to access the Lac at the right end as you walk up the path to the Lake if you are bold enough to consider this. Daft though it sounds wish I had brought my face mask and fins - it is THAT clear. Anyhow my advice for a successful trip is as follows:

1) get to the car park as early as you can - it fills up in no time. 10am on a good day is pretty late. Once at Corte town its a 9km/ 20 minute drive upto the car park before the walk up
2) take a kagoul/waterproof, some good walking shoes and a body warmer even if its sunny - its a mountain at approx 1600m and 1970m above sea level for Lac du Melu and Lac du Capittelo so this is high up, the wind can rise significantly and the weather can change quickly. You can walk it on a good day in pumps i wont deny it but i strongly recommend more robust walking shoes. Even in light rain the rocks get slippery and its easy to stumble

3) take a box of sandwiches, fluids/water and a snack. Have a good breakfast in the morning too so you are well fuelled as its a reasonably demanding climb

4) this aint a casual walk - the final stage in particular to Lac du Capitello is steep and demanding - dont underestimate this or the kit you should take. The stage to Lac du Melu has some ladders and chains to assist you, dont panic it isnt open mountaineering but it is tricky in places although safe

5) some people took young kids up but seriously I took my twelve year old and she found it tough going on a good day - 10 year old up only I suggest

5) cant believe I am writing this but take some shorts/swimmers and a towel if its summer and also your goggles. if you can and are a confident swimmer man up and take the plunge - seriously I would happily do it again and would love to see the clarity of the Lac in all its beauty

Enjoy - despite the hike - its well worth it (lac du Melu is great - until that is you see Lac du Capitello!

Lac de Capitello - another stumming Lake from the Restonica Valley
Aug 2015 • Family
If you're feeling energetic you can climb up to Capitello from Lac de Melo. Here the scenery is even more stunning and often there's still snow by the Lake even in August !

Well worth the extra effort

Well worth pushing on from the lower lake (Melo ?) esp. if the weather is good. If not too cold find a quiet spot and take in the atmosphere.

Great Hike
Jul 2014 • Couples
When the woman at our hotel suggested this hike, she made clear - and then reiterated - this is a hike, not a walk. She wasn't kidding. Because of a washed out bridge, the "official" hike starts after about a 20 minute, well, hike through some hills and woods.

From the head of the official trail, then, it's about an hour's hike up to Lake Melo and another 45 minutes or so to Lake Capitello. Make no mistake: the trail is rough and in places quite steep. Good shoes, plenty of water, snacks if not lunch, and a reasonable level of fitness are needed.

The reward, though, is incredible. We've hiked in Patagonia, in Torres del Paine, and while the area here is smaller, the experience for this hike was similar. Great views, spectacular scenery, and a very well-maintained trail make this a no-brainer. As long as you recognize it's a reasonably challenging hike, not a walk.
