Weifang is known to be super windy, and is the site for the annual Weifang International Kite Festival.
This is a serious kite flying competition as well, with many world records being broken there.
Fun and super informative!

Who knew that Weifang is the Kite capitol of the world! I didn’t until I went to Weifang this summer. The museum is laid out beautifully and takes about two hours to tour if you take your time and read all the information.
One of the most interesting stories was about the military who used kites to put a man near the enemy camp. While the man was in the air on the kite he started playing songs that would make the enemy homesick! There are some Americans also mentioned in the museums history.
The beautiful kites are displayed EVERYWHERE throughout the museum. As I said, the museum is laid out well and is presented very well. If you get to Weifang, go to this museum. Be sure and take your passport with you.

I was fortunate enough to visit during the International Kite Festival! There were lots of people there from all over the world. The museum is an impressive building on the river. It has been beautifully done with history and folklore, kites and statues and a wonderful gift shop!!!! There are ancient kites, modern kites, kites that are 3D and kites that make noise when they fly - all of them works of art. A great place to spend a couple of hours. The perfect follow up is the kite festival itself if you are lucky enough to go!

We had been told this museum was nice for about 1 hour. That was about right. Nicely build traditional kites and some modern ones. I recognized a lot of them from a book I had bought in Beijing. It was a nice finish of our stay in Weifang.

When Visiting Weifang the viable number of attractions to see is not that much, so out of all the possible selections this I would guess is something free to do.

We intended to visit the museum four years ago but for some unknown reason it was closed but this time were lucky.
This modern museum is in the city centre in the appropriately named New World Kite Square, in the centre of which is a tall white ‘thing’ surrounded by plaques. There’s one for Poole Kitefliers.
The museum is the building with the blue curved roof. Free entry but, as ever, take your passport as you’ll be expected to put an entry into the visitor’s book.
There many exhibits all in display cabinets with English captions spread over two floors, connected by a lift. There are rooms dedicated to the culture of kites, the history of kites, kite competitions, kites in war, kite design, kite construction etc.
There’s a small room where you can get your hands on a few kites and a small workshop making and decorating kites. On the first floor there’s a very nice shop to buy a souvenir. They may be a bit pricy but I think it’s the only kite museum in the world!

Kites from all over the world. Free admission. In the center of town, near the railway station. I missed the Kite festival which I would have loved to see.

After seeing Yangjiabu which is a kite factory, museum didnt impress me much though I should admit it has the greatest old and historical kites in the world. Since last year they made free entrance.

Free for foreign passport holders. More information and better English translations than the museum at the culture village. Takes about half an hour if you're just checking it out and not a kite aficionado.
