Beautiful view and challenging ski courses, easy to get to lodges, and of course, pool tables and boiling saunas. Obviously, quite icy so don’t expect it to be Japan 2.0, but great for NZ. 9/10.

We stayed in Shannon House and Cottage in Ohakune and were right beside Mt Ruapehu. Lovely to wake up and see the mountain and whether the conditions were right for walking and exploring.

You can either hike after taking the highest chair lift, but it is still a decent hike. Or you can take a scenic flight, there are several flight operators working from Taupo and National Park/Whakapapa village
