Amazing hike with beautiful views, but unfortunetely the number of tourists is too high - even out of the peak season I had to walk in a line of hundreds of people without any chance to pass them on the narrow path. Anyway it was probably the best place on North Island.

Tongariro Alpine Crossing has amazing views. We did 19km in 6 hrs and each part of the national park is more interesting than other. Weather helps a lot here, so my recommendation is to stay around 2/3 days to do the waling in good conditions, once it is a very unpredictable place, can be raining in seconds. Walking is a... More

The trek itself is quite nice if the visibility is good. For us the visibility was quite bad, you could see the lakes, and from time to time Mt. Ngauruhoe, but overall quite cloudy. I found the terrain a bit monotonous. Most of all it was the busiest hike I have ever done in my life. I have hikes a... More

Due to bad weather predictions the shuttle buses were cancelled but the day dawned clear and we drove up to the start and planned to walk the crossing as far as the Blue Lake then return . We included the spur to the Tongariro summit and enjoyed stupendous views with recently fallen snow covering the upper slopes on all sides.... More

I did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on a sunny day which is absolutely to recommend. The views you get from high up there are amazing! In the two lower thirds of the crossing, the path is well prepared and with stairs, further up it's not anymore so you need to watch where you're setting your next step. The Emerald Lakes... More

We started at 8am, at the beginning there were many people. But during the walk this became less. We had very bad wheater (rain, hard wind, clouds and minus 3 for temp) at the beginning to the top. But this made the walk for us even nicer/morr challenging. At the top the sight became slightly bettee so we had the... More

We enjoyed this challenging walk. Stunningly spectacular and very satisfying. All types of terrain, Volcanic, misty, shingle, rocks, tussock, bush.. Beautiful colours. Travelled November 2016. Extreme winds especially on South Crater but we got there. Recommend boots as shingle coming down is very thick and would get into shoes. We are amateur at this but with boots, backpack, hat, gloves... More

An unforgettable walk/hike over the Tongariro crossing, full of so many different terrains and stunning views. The emerald lakes in particular were breathtaking (aside from the downhill slip & slide over shale to get to them!). It took us just under 6.5hours to complete, sturdy soled trainers were OK on a good day if you don't have hiking boots. Recommend... More

this is a must do, trouble is arranging on a good day when not too crowded. a lot of people on this walk, try to do at the beginning or end of season midweek, also put aside a few days so you can chose the best weather, on a good day you can see mt taranaki and lake taupo. DOC... More

While the Tongariro Alpine Crossing may be New Zealand's most popular day walk, it certainly still requires some pre-planning and effort. The views offered over the vast expanse across to Mt. Taranaki on the ascent are spectacular, and walking across the crater floors seem almost moon-like. The emerald pools are the big goal for this walk and do not disappoint.... More
