The two trips are very different. Our company operates the Haggas Honking Holes trip and also an extended blackwater rafting option called Tumutumu ToObing. The blackwater rafting option called Black Abyss trip is run by a different operator. What I can say about the difference is that all of the blackwater rafting options at Waitomo are relatively gentle experiences. They all involve a mixture of walking, wading, swimming & tubing. None of them involve any rafting (the term is a bit of a misnomer). They all have great displays of the famous NZ glowworms and are generally suitable for a wide range of people from 12 yrs old upwards. Haggas Honking Holes is very different. This trip is more like canyoning under the ground. At times it's like abseiling in a washing machine. The cave plays tricks on you & at times is even a bit scary. The scenery is excellent with all manner of delicate speleothems - ones you dont tend to see in the main streams where blackwater rafting style trips are conducted. The minimum age is 15 years. There are some glowworms - which you get to see up close and personal - but it is not promoted as a glowworm experience. We believe it clearly has the most concentrated action of any adventure trip at Waitomo...including all of Waitomo's blackwater rafting options. It's not for the faint hearted - my wife describes the feeling afterwards "as though you have been hit all over with a small rock". It is however full of fun and an empowering experience. It is intended for moderatly fit people who want to try something new. You do not need any prior experience. So in conclusion, I think which option you choose will come down to how hard you want to challenge yourself. You should have fun either way.
