While I was attending a Croquet course my wife visited the Fairlynch Musium and fond it very interesting and informative, depicting the local history of the area. There was also a centenary tribute to 'Budleigh Salterton's adopted son' Reg Varney.

Have visited this museum more than once on stays in Buddleigh Salterton. On our latest visit we noted the Reg Varney exhibition, which proved a lot more interesting than we had expected. We also spent time in the Walter Raleigh, geological and local sectors. The displays are generally excellent, some of them using real imagination to cover a topic. E.g.... More

This is a must see place. Just the right size for me - I get quickly bored by most museums. Loved the Reg Varney display; took me right back to my childhood. Interesting geology display and info on local artifacts. A huge amount of written material to read in a big collection of folders, if you have the time. Do... More

On my last visit to the museum I was very surprised to find the Budleigh History section to have moved to a very small area in a small alcove with only room for 1 or 2 people to browse,it has always been situated in a large room upstairs where you could sit around a large table and spend as long... Thank you for your comments about the move of Fairlynch's Local History Room to the ground floor of the Museum. The move took place because the ground floor room is in fact smaller than the upstairs room, and we now have more space to display artefacts of local history interest. You may have noticed that the arrangement of cabinets is... More

My father and I visited in advance of taking my disabled and wheelchair bound mother. On they're website it implies it has disabled access. As it does. into the building only. If you are in a wheelchair you only have access to the ground floor. Both the basement and upper floor can only be accessed by steep/deep stairs only. The... More

Hi Mickie N: I am sorry you had this disappointment. Unfortunately the Devon Museums website allows only the option of a wheelchair symbol, with no indication as to how limited the access is. However, if you read further on in the website we give full written details as follows: "limited parking at museum for disabled visitors by prior arrangement. Level... More

We visited the museum on a grey day with our kids (14 and 10). It is a lovely museum and very well laid out. We all found the sections on the Jurrasic Coast and Smugglers quite fascinating - each of us learnt something new.
