Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The castle sits atop the hill above Aracena and the views are stunning. There is not much left from the castle itself apart from the walls, but the castle tells an interesting story of the reconquest by the Portuguese and later hand-over to the Castillian authorities at the end of the 13th century. Definitely worth a visit, but more for the story and the view than for the remains themselves.

This castle sits above the village of Aracena - actually it is mostly the castle wall as little is left of the inside. Absolutely worth going up for the view as well as the small church next to it.

We went 10 minutes late to the castle and it was already too late. TIP - GO BEFORE/ON TIME.
A little shop beside the church entrance is also the reception. The lady there spoke Spanish only. She was a kind lady who asked us to come for the later tour even though we had a morning slot which we missed. Found nothing spectacular in particular. Work is in process. The views are nice!

The fort is located directly above the cave.
The serpent footpath is not difficult at all to ascend.
On the toop you'll find a nicely restored medieval fort and a breathtaking panorama of Aracena and its surroundings.

There’s not much to see or do once you’re in the castle, but it’s ok for a wonder about in the sunshine. There is a headphone guide. It’s only open for a limited time during the day.

This, like the church that is nearby, is interesting more for the views than for the history or the architecture. The fortified area is largely in ruins, so as a castle/fortress, it is not as interesting as other castles in the area.

I agree that it the highlight is the walk to the top of the hill above Aracena to this lovely peaceful location and its great views. The walk down to the north of the castle via the pretty little lanes to the entrance to the caves is recommended. It is incredible to believe that under this hill and castle that there is the huge, incredible cave system.

It is an easy and pleasant walk to the top. It is even possible to drive till almost the top, but I wouldn't not recommend it.
One you are there, you can visit a church and fortress remaining standing wall. But nothing remarkable.
The best is the walking itself and the view. It is a great spot to take some shots of the whole town.

From the fort you have a great view over Aracena and the valley. Unfortunately the fort was closed and we could not enter. Anyhow it was worth to climb to the top.

.
Yes, more uphill.
But this is undoubtedly one of the hilltops in the Sierra de Aracena that is very much worth getting out of breath for.
Here, unlike in many other towns, you can walk all around the fortress on a wide cobbled path/road.
Walk all around and get the 360 degree view, as well as admire thestonework. Built originally by the Muslin Caliphs, it was taken over by the Spanish kingdom (you know - Isabella from the TV series) and further strengthened as part of the so-called "Banda Gallega", the line of fortifications to protect the rich lands of Spain from the kingdom of Portugal just down the road.
Take a deep breath, put on your walking shoes and start climbing.
