The bible explained in tiny figurines
Jun 2016 • Solo
This astonishing collection of biblical scenes is something I have never seen before. On the wall hangs a list of all the materials madre Margarida used. With simple things like wood, cotton, glass she was able to create fascinating figurines, which all wear different clothes and have individual faces.
The photos I've taken don't do justice to her work. It is really difficult to take pictures because all the scenes are displayed in one big glass case. Very much worth a visit. Entrance price is € 2.

Not quite what we expected, but worth a short visit if you're there
Jun 2016
First time we arrived, museum was closed. Second time, it was closed but a sign said "Opening at 13:30". We came back at 13:30 and only JUST as we had given up at 13:50, someone showed up (without the keys). A few minutes later it finally opened.

The short video you see at the beginning explains nothing and is worth skipping if possible. The arcana themselves, small figurines/miniatures of bible scenes, are all arranged in one huge multi-level glass case making them somewhat difficult to experience or enjoy. I would have enjoyed them much more if laid out more linearly with a note on each one explaining which bible scene it was.

Still, it was fun when we recognized specific ones (e.g. Jonah and the Whale).

Fascinating exhibit
Feb 2016 • Friends
The museum is located in the home of the nun who created the tiny figures and Biblical scenes in the 19th century. While the exhibit is small, it is a marvel, and the story of her life, as depicted in a short video and told by the docent, teaches us a lot about the limitations placed on women at the time. The visit doesn't take long, and it's well worth seeing.

The Bible in the form of clay figurines
May 2015 • Friends
This museum is a little difficult to find, the Trip Advisor map has only an approximate location. There is only one reason to come here and that is the incredible collection of figurines made by Madre Margarida. After an introductory video (which is only slightly spuriously subtitled) you will be shown through to the gallery which contains the epic story of the bible (and some apocryphal works) told by 2 inch clay figures in a giant display case. Being ex churchies we had a blast picking the often obscure stories depicted. I believe that Madre Margarida created the craft that is now popular all over the Azores, many gift shops contain similar figures for tricking out your next Xmas nativity.

Dedicated to the life and work of Madre Margarida do Apocalipe
Mar 2015 • Couples
Sister Madre Margarida do Apocalipe was a nun at the local convert before it was dissolved in the XIX. See entered the convert as she was the seventh daughter in a large family and there was no money left for a dowry. After the dissolution she bought a house ( the current) museum and started to create scenes from the bible made from tiny figures (size of Lego men and smaller) that she created giving each an individual character. The main display is a room sized display cabinet in which all the bible scenes are displayed. The museum is well laid out and has wheel chair access. The lady on reception was very friendly and helpful. There was a short video in English giving an overview of the life of Madre Margarida do Apocalipe.
