We only viewed the church from the outside, but we wanted to see one stave church while in Norway so this fit the bill. We then did the walk/hike that leads from the church to the old king's road which was nice.

Begin in the modern visitor centre on the river side of the road, to get your ticket. Get a pamphlet & ask if there is a guide at the Church. We had Bjorn & he was excellent. Very clear, touch of humour & made it...More

If you want to see and understand the Stave Church ~ this is the one to go to. It's a little off the beaten path, but it is remarkably preserved and it has an adjacent museum and education center/gift shop. The location is remarkable also,...More

Completely made out of wood. Not one nail it. Only wooden pegs. We visited it on the way to Gausteblikk, NO

Spectacular .... well worth the entry fee cost Ensure you ask for a guide as there is so much to see that can be missed easily Viking antiquities, ethereal presence and beautiful architecture

It was a pleasure to visit one of the few surviving old stave churches of Norway. The staff in the visitors center were very helpful and allowed us to go into the church even though it was almost closing time. This stave church is 1000...More

The medieval stave churches are a wonder of Norway. Very few survive and it is moving to see these wooden cousins to the Githuc churches of Europe. Also wonderful hikes available that start at the church.

Where did you rent the car in Flam to get to the church - public transit seems like a hassle and would only give us 20 minutes at the church for almost 2 hours of travel. Any advice would be welcome!
