Excellent museum tour - not to be missed by those interested in mines and mining!
Jun 2019
In June 2019, we visited this excellent museum of mining, which is built on the site of a former quarry, and tunnels which were used as shelters during WW2. In 1980, the tunnels were set up by miners to realistically recreate the internal environment of a mine. This museum is the result of that work.

The underground museum is only accessible with a guide, but audio tours are available in a range of languages. The English language audio was excellent. For the first time, we saw and were given detailed explanations of the different types of structures used to support mine roofs and different mineral extraction techniques.

The museum runs for about 700 metres in length, through secondary and main tunnels, and the tour lasts about one hour. The tour times vary according to the time of year, and are listed on the museum's website. The tour cost 5 Euros for an adult, which we thought excellent value. Hard hats are provided, and sensible shoes would be a good idea!

The exciting mine-cave adventure
Aug 2017 • Couples
Massa Marittima is an ancient city with many museums bust the most famous one is the Museum of Minery. The entrance costs 5 Euro and it includes guided tour that starts every hour. If you don't speak Italian, you may have audioguide in English, Russian, French or Spanish. Also, you may ask for the protective helmet especially if you are high person (above 1.80). There are many corridors in old minery, where different type of equipment is presented. You may take photos of everything but the time of excursion is limited ( around 30 minutes) so you will have to hurry up. Every piece of exhibition has its number and you may listen to the coresponding audio information. If you want to buy some sovenirs - do it at the very beginning because the entranse and the exit are situated in the different sides of the ex-minery)

interesting but ......

This was an interesting tour/museum. You are given earphones and a control but you also have a guide leading you though. The problem was that our guide wanted to go to lunch so before we could finish listening to what the audio-guide was telling us, she was moving on to the next area, but, it was still interesting.

If you are really interested in mining
Aug 2014
This museum is build in old mines. It is interesting if you are into minerals or mining history. For the casual visitor I found it to be quite boring. The guided visit is in Italian only. For non-Italians you can get a virtual guide in English, French or German.
