- Francois Jean VToronto, Canada137 contributionsOlive Oil EducationBefore arriving at the place, we thought we knew everything about olive oil, but during the visit, we realized that we didn't know much! Everything was very well explained, and the place was clean with its shop. We don't feel obligated to buy, but there are so many good and beautiful things that we can't help ourselves. So, from extra virgin oil to regular oil, there is something for everyone.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 May 2024
- Lynette MMaceo, Kentucky60 contributionsLearn everything you need to know about olive oil hereStopped here on our all day tour of the eastern part of Crete. It was such an educational, interesting, and yummy place to learn about the history of olive oil making, see how it is currently made, and to taste various flavors of olive oil (tasting honey was a bonus!). It was also interesting to see all the various other products made from olive oil and olive wood. I would highly recommend stopping here to visit!Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 4 July 2024
- A. LimpakCastrop-Rauxel, Germany34 contributionsNice stop over on the way back from Zeus CaveOmalia Olive Press is a perfect stop over if you go to the mountain plateau or if you come back. It’s super informative and impressive to learn something about the olive oil production. You can taste olive oil of course buy some or can ship to your home country. The staff is quite open and gives you all the necessary information without being so pushy in terms of buying. Great experience.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 September 2024

Beautiful "museum" (free admission) where you get a pictorial explanation of how olive oil is made then and now. Unfortunately, the shop is already quite expensive and the station are only with a monitor with explanatory videos. But by and large worth a visit. Is also very easily accessible from the A90.

On our way back from Lassithi plateau we stopped in Omalia olive press. You may watch the entire process of olive press, production of olive oil. Very informative guided tour. For those of you who are interested in top quality olive oil direct from source this is your place! There is a variety of olive products, cosmetics based on olive oil etc. Also, bulk packages of olive oil for the household ( cans or glass bottles) or smaller packaging for a nice gift to your loved ones. And guess their specialty!!! They got the best prices in the area as a wholesaler. Very warm and friendly staff and I highly recommend them!!!

Chanced upon this olive press whilst driving up to the high plateau.
Stopped to have a look and was met by the owner who was happy to see us and showed us around his business explaining the process of taking in harvested olives and turning them into oil which his family have been doing for three generations.
You then get to sample the different types of oil and understand the difference between them.
The oil tastes nothing like what you get in the UK which is horrible and as such I could never understand why people raved about it. I now understand having tried the olive oil that is natural without being doctored or mis sold as high quality when it is not.
You are also taught about the PH levels of the oil and different types that come from green and black olives.
For me a PH of 3 from a mix of extra Virgin pressed green and black olives is perfect!
Bought a couple of litres to take home that was very inexpensive.
They also sell local honey that’s a dark golden colour and is 100% honey not the doctored rubbish we get in UK.
If you only visit one place in Crete make it this you will not be disappointed.

Visited here as part a f the Hapy Train trip from Stalis to Krassi. Stopped for a little tour of the factory where a nice Greek gentleman talked through the process of making the oil from olives and got to sample some nice olive oil with bread at the end.
Was quite interesting and a good free thing to do if you have a spare 30 mins.

We were traveling by car on Crete and made a stop at the olive farm.
The owner welcomed us very warmly and the entire process from the olive in its original form to the finished oil is illustrated in the hall in an exciting way (approx. 30 minutes from the "first station" to the finished product. You also have the opportunity to test (and buy) different oils.
We think the idea and the implementation are great, it wasn't too crowded and you immediately found a holiday souvenir :)

It seems all the jeep tours go that way so that you know what to expect. They show you via videos on big screens how olives are process to olive oil with the machinery for you to see. They also have some old machinery and tell you how it has beed done in the past.
Nothing too fancy in the machinery but nicely presented and afterwards you know how olive oil is (was) being made. And then there is of course the shop...

We enjoyed a tour of a family run olive oil factory! Compared modern technology with old world technology! A quick and fascinating tour! Learned about the different varieties of olive oil and enjoyed a sampling!

A warm welcome followed by a free self-guided tour around the processing warehouse. The info board and videos explain the modern day manufacturing process. They also had some old tech on show to demonstrate how it used to be done. Free tastings and if you like what you taste there’s a shop too.

We visited this factory during our full day tour of Crete, and we really enjoyed it. The owner was super friendly, and we loved the tasting. I suggest reaching out prior to visiting to confirm if an appointment is needed, but definitely plan to visit this place!
